New Spotter Looking For Suggestions

Fri May 26, 2006 3:04 am

Hello A.net!
I've been a long time reader/viewer and I figured it was about high time I joined A.net and started taking my passion more seriously. With that, I am looking for suggestions on cameras for a newbie. What brands would you recomend? Beginer lenses? How important is a tri-pod? Lastly, what get's most bang for the buck? The last camera I was looking at was the Cannon Digital Rebel, however I don't know if the price tag is worth it.
Thanks in advance for all the help!

Go with the Nikon D70 + Nikkor 70-300mm ED glass. That should be enough for you to begin with. Average price for this combo around $700 + $250.
Why do you need tripod for? Are you planning on taking pictures at night?

That's what I figued, seemed sort of useless if I am not taking video.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definatly check out the D70.

Don't ignore the Canon 250D and 75-300 lens, another very suitable camera for someone starting out.
I am a Canon user but feel that there is little between them in quality. Plenty here will argue for one side or the other.
Go and try them out and see which one feels best for you. That is the best one for you

Mick, it's 350D.  Wink

At least, this is a good suggestion, the 350D with the 75-300mm. However, 70-300mm IS would be a better choice, with the 17-85mm lens.

I use the 70-300mm IS, 17-85mm IS and 75-300mm mark II.

A tripod is very important piece of equipment for photography. Unless, of course, you are buying this equipment just for a.net...

Nikon and Canon are with considering yes, but what about other brands?

Olympus, Pentax, etc. The photography world does not stop at Canon and Nikon.

All very intersting. I'll keep these suggestions in mind when I head down to Ritz Camera later today to browse. Which leads me to: Should I be searching for local camera shops more than I should be looking for online stores? I have heard good and bad things about both.

If you are going for the D70 you may as well get the D100. Adorama has a $200 rebate right now so you can get the body for under $1000. I don't like the 300G lens. Get the 80-200 2.8 and a TC. This lens is far superior and sharp. It is a bit of an investment but well worth it. As you progress you can build up to a 400MM lens.

Yes indeed, and my old film SLR was a Pentax also (probably the reason I stayed with Pentax, all the lenses  Smile).

That's it! Actually called the ZX-50 here in the states, it's a great camera that I still shoot with on occasion. My father uses it primarily now, as he is still a tried and true film guy.

Local shops are great to go and get a feel for the camera (VERY important), but they can't touch the prices that the online retailers are able to offer. I suppose though you would get your stuff right away locally, and returns would be much easier.

That said, here are two of the best (IMO):

Adorama

Or my personal favorite, B & H Photo and Video

Good luck!  bigthumbsup
