Heraklion, Crete. Photo Spots.

Wed May 31, 2006 5:20 am

Some time ago I posted requesting spotting info at Heraklion, Crete.
Well, I'm back from my holiday, I didn't get arrested and thought that the following information may be of use. It shows places where you can sit in comfort, i.e. with a beer and / or food in hand and take pics without being hassled by authority.
The beach scenery is quite pleasant when there are no aircraft around as well, if you get my drift.  Wink
The map is fairly self explanatory and the pic of the Aegean 737, while being crap in itself shows the kind of framing you get at around 300mm focal length from the public beach bar. You are closer to aircraft sitting in the bar / restaurant area to the right of the map.

MAP.

Thanks for posting, Brian.
That's 300 mm on a digital body? So you do need quite a long lens.
You're facing North, is that right?

Canon EF 600mm L lens would fit this place perfectly.  Smile

Or maybe the 500mm f/5.6L would be enough?

Do you know if Kokkini Chani is on that pic?

I took this pic there with my 380mm point-and-shoot Olympus C-750.

Yes. I would recommend a zoom of at least 300mm to get a decent close up. I used a Sigma 70-300. Something like a Sigma 170 - 500 would be perfect. The pic was taken from the public beach bar which is at least 100metres from the shoreline. Sitting down on the beach close to the waterline will get you that much closer to the aircraft. A cold beer available from the bar is a bonus  Cool

Yes, almost dead North. Best light at a guess would be between 1000 - 1600 hrs.
Don't forget that the bar restaurant to right of the bay is closer to the flight path and about 50 feet / 20 metres above sea level....and you can sit in comfort with another cold beer  Cool I didn't get any pics from there but I would guess that a zoom up to 300mm would be quite adequate as you are closer to aircraft on approach.

Kokkini Chani is two resorts East ( to the right ) of this map picture.
