Photo Opps At Chicago, Louisville, Lexington?

Sun Jun 04, 2006 7:21 pm

Hi Guys,

Summer holidays are coming soon and this year we will be going to (after taking my son to Disney Big grin ) Chicago, Louisville and Lexington. Are there any websites with photography locations or is there anyone out there who could point me in the right direction???

Thanks as always in advance!

Here's some ORD stuff:

I know someone of your caliber probably wouldn't resort to this, but you can actually get some pictures of very respectable quality through terminal windows at ORD.

Here's some SDF stuff from Bruce Leibowitz's homepage:

Can't find diddly squat on Lexington. I did a quick search on FlyteComm for Lexington arrivals and doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary, unless I'm missing on something here (such as mx or military ops there.) Apparently Louisville is pretty cool (the city, not only the airport) so you could always spend more time there instead of spotting at LEX.
Oh no, she's getting impatient! Take a stab at it!

Andy -

I have been doing some serious spotting in Chicago for the past year or so, and I can tell you there are lots of spots around ORD that are good for photography. E-mail me and I'll get you some specifics.

If you're interested - Chicago Midway has a hell of a lot of traffic as well, and you can get really close to the action (not hard to do on a one square mile airport lol). There are parks and parking decks all around Midway that allow great closeup views of landing and departing traffic. Specifically parks on 63rd street and the parking deck on 55th and Laramie.  bigthumbsup

I lived in Lexington a few years ago, and used the airport very often, although not for photography. From what I remeber, the runway sits higher than the surrounding roads, so there wouldn't be too many photo opportunities except for side-ons with blue skies. The road going to the terminal does parallel the taxiway leading to runway 22 for a little ways though (I think...) I guess that would be a morning spot to take taxi shots. LEX doesn't get too much traffic anyways though...except for RJ's and GA. Sorry I can't be of any more help though; I hadn't gotten into aviation photography yet when I lived there.

The horse country around Lexington is beautiful though. It's a good place to visit.

Andy:

There's a few good locations around SDF to catch some of the UPS heavies - mainly on the west side of the field like the nevada ave. location on bruce's site. there is also a location further south along that perimeter road (it looks like a construction entrance). it is right across the runway from the 747 ramp. there is a tall fence there however....but it allows you to capture stuff taking off that you would only see turning onto the runway if you were at the nevada ave. location (although that would be nice for the inbound ups push). i'm sorry i can't give better directions than that, but i think you'll see that it is relatively easy to find. i would watch flightaware and take note of the time of the inbound/outbound UPS pushes so that you can find the best time to go.

With Lexington, there is always the Kentucky Museum of Aviation which is one of the smaller museums around but definitely worth a visit. The folks there are very nice and are more than willing to help you out. One of their newer arrivals is an F-14 from VF-32 Swordsmen, although it is sad to see its engines and such gutted.

hope this helps...and enjoy your vacation!
