Shots From LAX On Sunday... What Do You Think?

Wed Jun 14, 2006 10:19 am

I just edited the first of my shots from a nice trip to LAX on Sunday (there I learned that when you face south for 5 hours, and the sun is in the west, one arm and half your face gets burned). Anyway, I'm looking for opinions on the shots and how they can be improved.

I've linked the small images (~1100 pixels wide). The unresized (but cropped) images can be found by changing "sm" to "lg" in the filename.

Singapor e Airlines A340-500 Overhead

China Airlines, cropped

China Airlines with more scenery (same overall shot as above)

Lufthansa Football Nose 747-400 (none with this reg/nose on airliners).

Aer Lingus A340

Aer Lingus framed by trees... this might be too artsy, but for a plane from a green country, I thought it was a neat shot.

Very dirty Air France 777

Korean Airlines 777

Korean Airlines 747 overhead

US Airways A319... one of my favorites, but I think the tail lost a little detail in resizing... even though both the large and small have the lowest possible compression...

Southwest 737 overhead

Air India 747-400

Thanks for all of your help!

Jeremy

I think the Aer Lingus A340 did well to arrive at its destination after loosing two of its engines.  Smile

As I was saying, Aer Lingus A330  Wink

The two that were screwed up have been fixed.

Some of those pics would be quite good with a decent edit.

For example: Air India, Air France 777, Korean 777, I would concerntrate on these as they look to be the ones that could be the best out of that bunch.

Work with them and ask for help if needed.

Any guidance as to what I should edit? I've already done a preliminary round of sharpening, color correcting, etc.

Next time you go, go earlier, face to the north, so the sun will be behind you, most of the shots look somewhat backlit which is a huge "NO-NO" here. They would be much nicer if the sun lit the side of the plane you shot.

Depends on where @ LAX you shoot. These were taken from the park at In-n-Out Burger. Unless you walked to the the bridge (which is an iffy spot due to nosey cops) facing north for nothside shots is not an easy task. Facing east however, is much more aplicable.

I know where they were taken from, been there many times. Shooting from there at that time of day gives less then great results.

It really depends. I shoot there about 2-3 times a month, and I have photos accepted from a large range of daylight. The morning is less feasable due to locations you would need to shoot from if you want the light behind you. I find it best after 4pm or so, all the way to sunset.

Jeremy, you have a few promising photos there, that with the correct edit could be added into the DB. If you ever want to shoot at LAX send me an email.

Thanks, Matt... I'm in LA until the beginning of August, so I have plans to go back quite a few more times... way better than Logan!

If anyone can guide me to the necessary edits, I'd really appreciate it... I've got a lot more shots from this trip (I ran to buy 2 gigs of CF cards while there) and the more help I can get on editing these, the better I'll be able to edit more from this trip.

Hi Jeremy,

Nice shots. Too bad the weather wasn't the greatest that weekend.

BTW, I was also spotting at In N Out last Sunday.

Regards,

Kevin

It is very easy. Shoot from Lot C (just east of Sepulveda) and you won't have any problems.

I'm not sure editing can help the example photos you have posted here. Hopefully you stuck around at the In-n-Out until the sun was lower in the sky to the northwest. The combination of high sun and hazy cloudy skies kill these otherwise good shots.

Is there a good spot within the lot? I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb as I shoot, plus there seemed to be a ton of light posts...

Just to answer your question above - yes there is a good spot. When you enter the lot, head north and east to a group of palm trees. I think it is near rows 21-22-23. There are usually no cars parked this far and there are plenty of views that avoid light poles. Just hunt around for a good spot and you'll be fine.
