How To Level When Reality Is Sloping?

Fri Jun 16, 2006 3:21 am

Hello again,

How do you do with your shots when you know that there is a perspective involved + the fact that the runway or the taxiway is sloping?

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...e=20060615_HALPI0379nefANOTHER.jpg

As the photographer you know perfectly well what is level with the horizon, and if the horizon is clearly visible there is often no real problem.

But if no horizon is included in the photo, how do you do then?
1. Level as you know is the truth and include the slope (as if you had used a perfectly levelled tripod)?
2. Or actually lie a bit to make it look level to avoid a rejection?

Maybe this is of no problem to any of you, but I hope I have stated my problem clearly.

NB that I am not complaining about the shot above being rejected - I was prepared for bad quality...

in this case I would use the gear to level the shot, + "feeling". now it feels wrong, and theh viewer doesnt care if the ACTUAL taxiway slopes.
what seems to be the officer, problem?

Frippe, difficult case here. If it was me i'd level using the edge of runway to the left. Also use the gear and balance it until it feels right.

I'm also guessing it was raining when you shot this? Some grain showing around the exhausts and gear from sharpening.

It just feels like it needs some CCW rotation. Even the trees, which I know don't always grow straight, look like they are leaning to the right. Good luck.

If you don't have anything in the shot to level against (e.g. poles), then best to level by gut feeling. If it is level by reality (because the taxiway isn't level itself), but the photo looks unlevel.... chances are it will be rejected level.

If it looks right, then chances are we will think so too.

Good Morning,

Thanks a lot to you all for your suggestions. I will now try to do a better levelling, and when doing so I will also see what can be done to better the overall quality, as there are only very few shots in the db now of this latest Airbus in the Wizz Air fleet.

Hello again,

Now I have tried to level using the wheels and the grass alongside the rwy and hope the levelling is better now?

Perhaps this photo will not be accepted after all, as the weather was a bit dull, but I would like to take a chance with it, since this Airbus is a brand new addition to the Wizz Air fleet.

What do you say about its chances now?

Hello again,

This one already in the queue when discussing the Wizz Air above I had no fear for, but now it was rejected as not levelled well enough. What kind of rotation and how much do you suggest for it to appear level?

It looks level to me, believe or not those little lights on the runway help me sometimes when I don't have any other reference point. I think the Ryanair shot is good too. Good luck!

Talking about level. How come this unlevelled shot was accepted on anet ? Is there a special reason to it ?

Can't you email the screeners? John happens to be a friend of mine and this is a shitty way to handle this.

What I would suggest for that one Frippe is to make sure that the treeline is level from one side of the shot to the other. It's the only thing you have to go with and wont be far out. I have the same problem at DSA. Look at the two below. No way in a million years would they look right without the backdrop, but the taxiway does slope that much.

On the face of it, that seems blatant, but that location is one of the hardest on Earth to get level. The background does slope upwards from left to right and I always feel from there that it is easy to 'unnaturally' level shots, but on mine in the past, I've usually had the tower or something else to use as a reference.

Regards,

Tim.

Ok, that seems to explain it. Thanks for your answer !

Hello again,

Just to inform you, the shot of the Wizz Air was recently added, after better levelling (and also some adjustment to reduce the bad weather haze).
Thanks for your suggestions, leading to this acceptance!
