Sun Jun 18, 2006 6:51 pm

Hi Guys,

I have one night / morning at LAX, is there any hotel with good AM views of traffic that can be caught by the lens from the room????? Or do I have to get out and about! Big grin

Thanks in advance to all!

Radisson mate but the windows are filthy, go up to the 12th floor and shoot from the balcony instead.

straight up the lift and your there...it's closed in the morning but you can make yourself at home on the sofas and just pop out to the balcony when you want to snap something.

Yep. by "closed", he is talking about the Bar/Lounge that is up there. The doors remain open. Its AWESOME up there first thing in the morning. Quite relaxing actually. I plan to be up there this next Saturday morning. (6-24-06)

both from Radisson balcony...the bar is shut til 5pm so you just grab a seat and sit there...when something comes you walk out the balcony door and shoot. it's really a smokers outlet more then anything.

You'll love it I think. Here is a morning shot from January, I would imagine the light is more down the back of the plane now instead of more southerly like it was in this shot.

Andrew,

seems that you are getting old, you start to ask the same questions over and over again.......

VG.

p.s. the rooms at the RAD can not be recommended though, you"ll be better off at the Hilton or Sheraton....but the spot on top is quite nice!

What size lens do you need to get images like the above from the 12th floor ???

Also do you get mixed traffic on this runway. Or is it just the heavies.

One final question. Can you read off the reg numbers for most traffic on the other runways/taxiways with a good pair of bino's. ???

Thx

Stayed at the Radisson last weekend, June 10-11, 2006. The rooms were very nice, worth the $109 a night, but the windows are filthy and it's not shootable. I stayed in the 9th floor and the windows cannot be opened, supposely for safety reasons. I guess high jump rate in L.A. :-P

But yes, check out the Penthouse (12th Floor). Well worth the visit. I'll be back in LAX in the fall and perhaps winter, so I know where I'll be staying at for now.

Oh yea, another thing about the Rad in the summer is that it's really close to the In N Out spot. It's a very easy 10 minute walk if you don't have a car. Also, if you rent a car, it's a $13 a day parking fee to park at the hotel. Just beware of that.

Kevin

You can see the bar using Google Earth, it is a circular room giving around 270 degrees of vision and is open for hotel guests all day although drinks are not served before 5pm, myself and several other crew from the other site spent a number of hours there over a few days and encountered no problems other than they were not too happy about us eating food that had been purchased elsewhere. As far as photography is concerned 400mm for a 737, 200mm for the Virgin 346. Spotting aircraft on the southside should be no problem at all with a pair of binos. This overview should help out with your planning, although my visit was in February so heat distortion was not so much of an issue as it would be now.

Are we talking 400mm after the 1.5X crop from digital, or before?

Cheers

400mm after the crop factor, plus some cropping of the image-but with clear air and good glass you will still end up with some sharp images. If I recall correctly you are using a full frame sensor Andy, so those pesky little Southwest and Alaskan 737s will be out of your range but the Asian and Euro heavies should be no problem at all.

70-200 should be good enough for a nice overview shot....

Sorry, but this is hard to understand....you'll use the bar to hang out and taking shots, but don't purchase drinks and food up there. It just makes me wonder how long they will tolerate non hotel guests up there......

Absolutely agree. I heard of guys buying Subway down the street and then sat up there eating it, don't do it. Either buy from the hotel or don't eat up there at all. They reserve the right to be the sole distributor of food and beverage on their property, you can't blame them. One other thing is go out and shoot and come back in, shoot and come back in. I have seen so many people just standing up there on the roof and whether you know it or not you stick out like a soar thumb! This just ramps up the exposure to draw police attention and ruin this spot for everyone. My buddy shot a picture from In N Out of people standing on the roof and you would be amazed how visible you are.
Enjoy it Andrew! It is an excellent spot. If I am down in LA at the time you are there, I would love to meet up with you. During the summer I am down there frequently on the weekends.

I was a hotel guest and wasn't eating anything while I was in the bar area, there were other people that were doing so (although they also were hotel guests) and it was definately frowned upon.

Embassy Suites across from the Radisson has good views looking north at the north runways, but this time of year might not be good. The rooms have sliding glass doors that open onto very small balconies. But at least you can get photos without glass in the way. Since you're in a room, you can set up a chair with a view out the window. Top floor is necessary to be above power poles, etc.

Its easy enough! You can eat hotel supplied food anytime you want in the Top of the Radisson, even when there's no one serving there - just call room service and they'll deliver to the top floor all day. Must say, I had a pretty good salad and several beers the day I was sat up there, all delivered pretty promptly by the room service staff and I didn't have to break off to go eat and end up missing something interesting!

when i returned in late jan with the new york crew they did ask us to buy drinks...we did without any hassle because we were enjoying the view, the NY guys were staying there but i was camped back down the road at the westin. Don't abuse the place, buy a little something and don't kick up a fuss if they ask you to!

just watch out for Jesus or was it Ramone? Futt help me out! cos he dropped a drink on someone.

So do they not care if you're not a guest and up there when the bar's closed? Of course, if it were open, I'd be sure to get something, but the lighting on that side is better in the morning, anyway... then to In and Out  Smile

Same question here. Would a regular cable system on a hotel show the game?
I'll be in LA from the 5th till the 12th.

It will probably be shown on ESPN or ABC 7. Both of which are channels on the tv's in the raddison hotel.
