What Will Your Next Lens(es) Be? #2

Tue Jun 27, 2006 11:15 am

Do you remember this thread: RE: What Will Your Next Lens(es) Be? (by JeffM Feb 6 2006 in Aviation Photography)

That thread was started some time ago. Now, it's summer, many people are on a vacation.

So, what will your next lense or lenses be?

In the next coming months, I'm going to sell the EF-S 17-85mm lens and buy the 24-105mm f/4L, 50mm f/1.8 II, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM, 17-40mm f/4L and 70-200mm f/4L.

I will first buy the 24-105 and sell the 17-85, then I'll buy the 18-55 and 50 II, 18-55 is only for cockpit shots as 24-105 isn't wide enough. I will buy the 17-40 and 70-200 later as I want sharper telezoom shots and sharper wide-angle shots. 50 1.8 because it's sharp and on a pretty nice portrait focal length.

I am not planning to buy this lenses very soon, just after about 6-16 months.  Smile

I look forward to see what you are going to buy...  Wink

Regards,
David

Well, I just got my new DSLR, so I won't be buying new lenses anytime soon. Also, there are not many cheap, good-quality lenses for the 4/3 mount Olympus uses, so I'm going to have to dish out some serious bucks for a new lens. In a few years, then, when I have a lot of money to waste, I'll hopefully buy this lens, or it's successor.

http://www.olympus-esystem.com/dea/products/lens/90-250_28/index.html

With the E-500's 2x crop factor, that's a range of 180-500mm, all with an f-stop of 2.8!!!!!!

I want it! But it costs about 6100 USD.

I'd love to say a 24-70 f/2.8L to replace the 24-85 f/3.5-4.5, or a 400 f/5.6L for a little extra reach from the 70-200 + 1.4, but it'll definitely be a while either way...

After finally getting an excellent tele-zoom (Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8) a few months ago, I'm now more interested in the other side of the spectrum. I'd love to get one of those 10-20 or 12-24 digital wide zooms... They're quite difficult to get though, it seems.

I am not an expert in aviation photography yet. But next time I am going to change from usual digital camera to SLR, especially to Canon EOS 350d. Probably I will take the KIT version including the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens.

I know there are many different situations that require many different lenses. But can anybody recommend an additional lens for aviation photos, e.g. for inbound a/c or so?

Well, no immediate plans for new lenses. I currently have the 17-40, 50 f/1.8 II, 70-200 f/4, and the 1.4TC. For aviation, maybe some more reach?

If I was putting together a wish list I would probably go for the 400 f/5.6L in terms of sharpness vs. affordability.

Until you try to shoot a whole airshow with one.
You'll need a Kirk King Cobra or Wimberley for it.

I hope to pick up my Canon EF 500mm f/4 IS lens this week.

Talk about a big lens! 300-800mm by Sigma. Oh well, that's more a dream than my next lens. If I were to buy one, it'd certainly be the 100-400 IS USM by to replace my current 75-300mm USM. But patience, gotta finish my studies first  Wink

Yikes!  Wow! Shouldn't you also buy the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM tripod?  Smile

This is a heavy beast... I've tried the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM on my 20D and I couldn't hold it steady. Too heavy. I don't even want to try the 600mm. Maybe you're a big guy... Haha!

I currently own a Canon EF-S 17-85, a 70-200 f/4L, and a 50mm f/1.4. What I'd like to do is replace the 17-85 with a 24-105 and a 10-22, but as you can imagine, those 2 are *expensive*. And I'd love a 100-400 for aviation photography, but it's not exactly cheap either. Therefore I'll keep dreaming for the moment.

Manuel. Do you have tripod mount on your 70-200 f/4? If so, do you use it always?

Thanks,

No, I find the 70-200 f/4 to be very light. I usually use it hand-held, therefore I don't have a tripod mount. I have tried using it on a tripod just to check what it feels like, and while certainly the camera won't be well-balanced, it didn't look like it wanted to break or fall.

Thinking about Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D or 70-200 f/2.8 AF-S VR. 70-200 VR seems to be more versatile, but it costs almost twice as much...

Thank you Manuel. Would you recommend the tripod mount if one is going to use the lens often on a tripod/monopod?

Yes, if you use it often on a tripod, definitely. But if it's only for occasional use like I do, it's not worth the money.

I have a 28-135 IS and a 50 1.8II right now to go with my 10D. They're both fantastic lenses, and I'm very happy I bought them.

Right now I'm in need of a telephoto so I can actually start taking decent pictures of aircraft. I anticipate to have about $500 on hand around October of this year, so I'm thinking about either the 70-300 IS or the 70-200 f/4L. I'm having a really hard time deciding, but at this point I'll probably go with the 70-300 IS.

Farther on down the road when I hone my photography skills and come in to some money, I'd like to upgrade to a 24-105 IS, a 17-40 f/4L, and a 70-200 IS 2.8 with a 1.4x teleconverter. That would be my dream setup for the moment.

-AC773

EDIT: On second thought, it'd probably be more convenient to have a 100-400 IS rather than a 70-200 w/ a TC. Oh well, I won't have to worry about that for quite a while  Wink

I bought a 70-200F2.8LIS and a 24-105F4LIS last week and they should both be here tommorrow! Finally, they keep getting delayed.

Next lens for me will be the 500F4LIS and a 200F1.8L if i can find one!  Sad

Will probably pick up a new body around september time too, have a feeling something nice and new should be out by then!  Silly
