Biggest Dust Spot In The World

Fri Jun 30, 2006 2:04 am

Hi again everyone,

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get rid of this monster?

http://www.airliners.net/uf/536886940/1151600450ZF91Ri.jpg

Normally the clone tool seems to work well, but how do I go on when the dust spot is over detail, cloud in this case?

Regards,

Tim.

Clouds can have almost any shape, can't they?

I don't like cloning, therefore I keep my sensor clean. Works much better this way and saves quite some time.

Wouldn't use the clone-stamp tool here, try to lighten up the area.

Try using the heal tool... There is a how-to PDF in the site...

Glenn,

It's a Canon as far as I know

Tim,

Not the biggest spot in the world, I had a larger and darker one once! Get yourself a Copper Hill kit, expensive at first for the kit including spatular etc but the eclipse fluid is only about £7 or so a bottle and you get 100 pec pads for a good price too and it in the kit you get excellent instructions and the method works really well; interestingly I have also noticed I get less dust now I regularly clean my sensor, whether thats luck or whether the eclipse used helps to repel dust i'm not sure.

As for your short term solution on this shot I guess just clone it out if possible

Cheers

Ben

Screeners will back me up by saying we have seen worse. Sorry, your application to the Guiness Book of World Records will have to be withdrawn  Wink

Thanks for your input guys. Will have a go with the healing brush. That certainly looks good Brian, thanks. Not had much experience of using the healing brush, as I've never really needed to before.

It was taken with a 300D Glenn, what makes you ask?

Not had much success with the clone tool on this one Ben.

Funny that, I was talking to a guy who recomend that to me yesterday when I took that shot. Going to invest in one I think.

I wouldn't mind, but I went into the back garden and took a few shots of the sky on Wednesday night and equalised them knowing I was going out on Thursday and all was clean, so I've no idea where that came from.

Tim.

Heres a workflow given to me by Wietse that works a treat.....  Smile

1. Layer -> Duplicate layer
2. Press F7 to bring up the layers window
3. Select the new "Background Copy" layer (just click on the name)
4. Image -> Edit -> Equalise
5. Select the "Background" layer. You will still see the equalised image, but all editing you do are done on the original layer.
6. Select heal tool
7. Heal the dustspots on the image. You will not see the spots disappear, but the do disappear on the original image. Remember which ones you did already. If you healed all dustspots, -> step 8.
8. Right click on the "Background Copy" layer -> Delete Layer
9. You should now have the original image with the spots removed

Cheers Simon,

Will give that technique a try. I did manage to get rid of it with the heal tool, but I think the front end of the aircraft might be a bit soft. It isn't helped though by the fact you can see into the windows, and the wall gives a blurred look to the shot.

That's what I've done, only I've had a bigger "dust spot" on my Canon EOS 350D Rebel. The healing tool in Elements 3.0 works real good in getting rid of it more often than not. Took it in to Pictureline here in Salt Lake City for a sensor cleaning and the technician pointed out to me that I had a scratch on my sensor array cover that would likely be a $200+ repair and entail sending the body back to Canon USA in Irvine, CA. It's been a week, but oh well, I'll just give the new Canon EOS 30D a good workout!  biggrin  It is fun making all of those SLC Dept of Airports Cops jealous of my new toy!  irked
