Is My Camera Broke

Thu Jul 06, 2006 7:36 am

Hello,

I equlized a photo a few minutes ago to check for dust spots and i noticed this really weird line like a smiley face :S

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7899/bcc00403gr.jpg

Is this showing something wrong with the camera?

Cheers

I don't know, but if it is, tell it to go looking for a job in the morning.  Smile

Maybe some sort of liquid from cleaning it? That'd be my guess.

Well whatever it is, I hope it is easily fixable, if not though, you can always take it back to the store since it's only a week old. Hope it all works out for you, enjoy that nice piece of equipment.

Shouldn't have that on a new camera. I would definitely take it back, that looks horrible.

Ben

Don't think it is broken at all.

It looks like to me you have possibly used the shadow highlight feature of Photoshop too much. Equalizing the image makes the bands show up more.

Unequalize it and you will probably see white halos.

I may be wrong but looks like colour banding due to incorrect processing.

Your going to struggle to see if the camera is broken from that image.
I agree with Gary in that it's the processed image which is causing this.

You need to check a neutral image, something with a plain colour and lighting then just import it into Photoshop and the try the equalize feature.

Ian.

I think Gary might be right about this.
The halo's seem to appear close to dark areas in the picture (the bottom of the fuselage and also the vignets on the bottom left and right corner of the picture).

Is this image already processed or was equalizing your first step?

In that case perhaps you can send this guy one of your spares !

Is that 4 spare D2xs or just 4 spare cameras WOW.
Love to be in your shoes.
I'm also thinking its a processing issue and not a camera issue if it only happens on some shots and not all of them.
OR could be the lens at certain light bouncing off one of the elements .
If you have a filter on try to shoot a few frame without it and see how it goes.

Hello again,

Well after some further testing, i think it was my editing that was screwing it up :S. I don't seem to have it on the originals or any photos i took yesturday.

It wasn't appearing on all of them, which is what i couldn't work out. Ive got to get the sensor cleaned anyway, its laiden with dust spots and its literally brand new :S.

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/9590/bcc01856ig.jpg - This was shot at 1/800sec ISO 100 F4.8 at 195mm. Its fine on 2.8 with out the tc so i don't think its due to being "wide open".

Anthor question ive got which ive spoken to someone who think its the equipment. My photos were extremley sharp when i first got the lens which was less than 1 month ago. That was with a teleconverter. Its now virtually impossible to use the tc because of it being sooo soft. Its not perfect even without it. Ive tried it on two different bodys, the D2x and the D50. Are these things suppose to degrade this much or not. I get alot of use out of it, but even so i wouldn't have though it would have lost the sharpness i originally had. The combo i have is a Nikon AF-S 70-200mm F2.8 VR with a Nikon TC-17E II

Would be great if anyone could advise me what to do.

Cheers

Ben

4 spares, I don't (sadly) own a D2xs (I've had an offer for a D2x but it's beyond my budget). But that includes an F100 and F80. I've been buying cameras for 25 years and never thrown one away (though one was stolen 6 years ago).

Your like my friend Chris (StealthZ) he keeps his old cameras .
He still has a D30 3 mega pixel DSLR and still produces some stunning results.
