Some viewers comments say it's a brilliant act of photography, but it certainly wasn't - it was pot luck.

It was a snowy day and as we don't have much snow I took a day off from work to do some snow photography at the Aviodrome
A friend was set for a flight in a historic Fokker S11 that same day something I was not aware of.
Unfortunately he had heart his back the day before and told me I could take his place if I wanted to...... well ehhh if you insist Big grin
Just lucky to be around.

I got a couple of lucky shots

This is certainly the most relevant, as the conditions were crazy. It had rained all night and I came in from GVA that morning, the runway was soaked. But the sun came out and the black clouds stayed, and this plane rotated right in front of me... I'm very happy with that shot!

This is my second lucky shot. I had never taken any piucture in quite end of day conditions and I still gave it a try. I had had my DSLR for only about 5 weeks and clicked. Never thought it would turn out that good!

And I hope that there will be a lot lot more, and wish the same to you!

I was waiting to catch a connecting flight at St Louis and had been snapping shots through the terminal windows when I heard this muffled roar. I saw these two Phantoms out of the corner of my eye and literally raised the camera and snapped them, no time to focus or alter any of the settings or even think about how I was panning. And with a window in the way as well! Am still astonished that it came out so well and was good enough for A.Net.

I've got two lucky ones.

Firstly, this Emirates A340-500 contrail shot with the Emirates logo on the wing box. It just flew right over the top of me in between all the clouds that day.

Secondly, this wing shot over the wing of a TCX A332 on my way home from cuba. The wing and winglet are nicely silhoetted against the setting sun over the horizon. The lucky thing is there's minmal reflection on the window, no lens flare from shooting towards the setting sun and the overall quality of the image since it was taken with my 3mp Kodak DX4330!

There were light poles to the left and the right of the frame. The two planes just happened to be in the right place at the right time... lucky me! haha. I love this shot.

The BA 747-400 at Fairford i was shooting static display with a smaller lens when mate and fellow photog Spencer Wilmot said "the BA 74 is off", i turned took 2 quick frames 1 being this shot the other someones head!

The BA Concorde on her last day was shot as i stood on a bollard shooting through a horrible mesh fence, out of 50 frames this was the only 1 i could salvage.

The Continental Peter Max was the only aircraft i was concentrating on, only when i got home did i realise i had the 777 and 3 other inbound aircraft in the same pic!

This shot was not planned, the US Air 737 just kinda flew into the frame while I was taking some cockpit shots:

Another lucky shot - I was trying to catch some de-ice action, I didn't realize the APU was running on this aircraft until the steam hit it:

would have to be these 3 without doubt, the Vegas one is probably the luckiest of the lost, hard shot when you have to shoot through a fence.

I was watching these come and go all week and wondering how the hell I was going to get a good shot.

I then got talking to the guy who did snorkelling trips in his little motor boat and asked what the chances were of being out in the harbour when a Chalks was landing - "NO PROBLEM" was the reply. We went out in the boat and sped to the west end of Nassau Harbour (where the cruise liners berth) and waited. "Action" (the boat guy) then spotted the Mallard and gave me the bad news it was landing from the EAST and to sit down and HOLD ON!

We rocketed back towards my hotel and all the while I could see the plane getting closer and closer to the water. Action then spun the boat round and I stood up and started firing the shutter while pacing the plane.

I took maybe 100 shots but only got one that one that I REALLY love!

Thinking back, the luckiest part of the day was not ending up in the water with my 20D & 100-400 round my neck!!!

Regards

John

For me I guess this was the shot above all others where luck played a part:

The weather that morning had been truly dreadful, but there were a few of us there (some from far afield) and so we stuck it out. There was no way I would have gone out with the camera that day had it not been for friends previously arranging to meet up. Just before this 747 departed the incessant rain briefly stopped and the light improved enough to allow me to get something decent for this photo. Had those two things not happened together I don't think I could have got the quality needed for acceptance. The fact that there was so much surface water waiting to be blasted from the runway adds to the drama of the shot.

Then I continued to be lucky with this one, because it got noticed on the day of acceptance, which led to it briefly reaching Top of the Day. Then, as a result of that, it got further visibility on the site, which has enabled it to remain in lists where it continues to get viewed. Not surprisingly, this is far and away my most successful photo in terms of number of views.
