I've Finally Lost My Patience

Tue Jul 18, 2006 6:45 am

Hello,

I've been patient and collected about the screening on here, queue situation etc but i've had enough! In 2004 when I first got the finepix I would go to the airport all the time striving to get that shot on A.net. I accepted many rejections, rightly so, and learnt a lot from it. People said i'd never get a single shot on with that camera but I managed almost 40, some of which people thought were shot with SLR'd. Once I got my canon it was a new challenge and good fun. I have had a lot of patience and never emailed screeners angrily or posted here like some. However this is the last straw.

I wait two weeks for a photo to be screened, a photo I am extremely proud of and I feel deserves to be in this database more than any I have ever taken. After my short wait for it to be screened I have a bad quality just like that. No consideration whatsoever has been taken into account in that it was shot in the middle of a storm and poor lighting. If this isn't high enough to get in, I don't know what is and quite frankly i've had enough, whereas I used to learn now i'm just fed up and annoyed, this place isn't what it used to be any more! Here is the shot in question, i'm out

Sam  Sad

Thats one great picture. I remember you jumping around the car park when you took that, followed by us all swearing when there was a loud clap of thunder.

That shot is amazing, i aint a photo buff but i cant see why its been rejected at all, considereing some of the shots in here.

Good pan, nice view of the aircraft.

If there are any screeners in here, tell us why it did not get inl, its amazing shot

A clear reject I think everyone will agree.

If you want to leave because of it, fine. Just know that this shot wouldn't have gotten in the db two years ago, or even four years ago. Improve your technique before critizing this site.

Sam, its a nice attempt, but I agree with Tim. Its a shame that once again someone set out solely to get photos on here. Keep trying but if its too much then that your choice. Dont mean to sound harsh either mate.

Can someone explain whats wrong with the pic.
I have just been looking thru some of the database and this is better then a few of them.

I have seen pics added after 2001 that i dont think should be in the database and they are.

I definitely understand your frustration, man. I kind of lost it last week, myself.

I decided to take a week off (I should be doing other things anyway) and come back later.

Some things you should know though - this forum can sometimes be helpful.
1) This site does not care about what pains you had to take to get a shot. It only cares about how good the shot is. Think golf, not figure skating - you want to get the ball in the hole; you will not be awarded difficulty points.

2) Don't shoot when you'd have to rely on difficulty points to get a shot in.

3) If the shot is difficult, it better be really cool - but still properly edited.

4) Finally, don't ever go out with the purpose of getting a shot on A.net. You'll have more fun with this hobby if all you care about is improving your own skills.

With that said, your shot:
- It is oversharpened on most of the plane. Did you use CS2's smart sharpen or USM feature with too high a radius? There are pronounced jaggies on the horizontal stabilizer, and white halos around all the titles.
- It is dark. Lighten it up.
- It is blurry, especially on the tail. Props for your effort! Panning... in low light... in bad weather... you've picked the hardest shot someone can take. But, unfortunately, that simply won't be an reason to accept.

I hope this was somewhat helpful, frustrated photographer to frustrated photographer.

Indeed, what you would expect from a screener too, not the rudeness earlier.

That weekend in MAN I took soem 300 photos, only 2 of which I even took the time to upload on here so that definately proves it is not my number one priority, I enjoy it just as much shooting for myself.

I didn't edit it myself, this time I sent it to a trusted friend who's a professional photographer,

Thanks

I can sympathise here with you Sam because I feel the same at this moment in time. I do agree about the rejection of your shot though. Its a super shot given the conditions, but it was always going to be very difficult to get that one on here. I'm getting very frustrated at the moment as well. My acceptance ratio has gone from 70-80% down to 0%, and I mean 0%! I've recently changed lenses and for some reason, I just can't get to grips with sharpening with it. I've just had this one rejected for 'soft' and 'oversharpened' and I just get the feeling the ones I have in the que at the moment are wasting everyones time.

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...717_Astraeus-B737-33A-G-STRJ-3.JPG

For me, the main thing is the enjoyment of being in the outdoors and shooting a few frames, buts its also nice to get a few shots accepted on here, a sense of acheivment. It is very frustrating though when you get a shot which you think is fine, only for it to be rejected so I can sympathise.

Hi Sam,

I fully understand your frustration!

However, I think the shot you posted has at least two problems which may result in quality rejection.

1. Somewhere is soft, like cabin windows, and the tail
2. Somewhere is jaggy, like the lettering "bmibaby.com" on fuselage, the leading edges of the wing and stabilizer.

And somehow I feel the shot suffers a little blurry problem, as well. Of course, I am not a screener. But I still hope my words help!

Hey,

I'm starting to calm down and the effect of too many Pimm's this evening is wearing off  . It's odd how your hype over a shot when you upload can block the true vision, a bit like beer goggles but with photos  And that is not the best shot i've sent in here, that would have to be the London overview

Anyhow, thanks to all those who replied with reasons etc and it is a recomendation not to open screening emails under the influence of alcoholic beverages

Thanks,

Sam

As soon as I read this I remembered the part in Glengarry Glenross when Ed Harris answers Al Pacino, by saying "Fuck the machine? Fuck the machine? While he totally shits on Jack Lemmon Then asks Pacino" what is this courtesy class?"

Sometimes people here come across a certain way, even our JeffM lends a personal flair with his advice. In the end however they are telling it to you straight. Just because many other disgruntled photogs have started this thing with the persona of the screeners doesn't make it so. If they answer your question, take the advice and nothing more. You will be better off.

Hi Sam,

It's no use coming in here and mouthing about it now. If you had come in here and asked for help when you uploaded it, or better still before, I'm sure there would have been plenty of people willing to offer advise. I like the shot, but the quality isn't out of this world and it was rejected. The standards here now are very high and it is difficult for people to have a great amount of success without knowing what is required. I hope I'm not sounding patronising here. Don't worry about any of the egos you might come across, just ask with the next shot and you'll get help.

I just hope you know that there are a ton of jaggies on the elevator and the flaps my friend, before you go all crazy up in here. Besides that, the post in the background is annoying, plus I could do with a different approach when centering this one.
But other than that, it should get accepted.  Smile

Your first problem was trying to get pics on here. Never do that.

Shoot for what you want and don't worry about here. What you've done is a prime example of what people should NOT do. All your doing is learning on how to shoot to a set of rules, which is not what photography is all about.

This sharpness thing and different monitors is becoming quite something, on my reasonably high end Trinitron I can see the beginings of a sharpness issue but "ton of jaggies" no, I know if I go and look on the Dell 17" LCD in the other room the pic will likely look much worse.
I am finding as the screening community moves towards an LCD world I am having more and more of a problem producing photos they like!
Not in a rush to change tho, my monitor allows me to edit and sharpen for beautiful prints.

Back to the topic, Sam, nice capture but the conditions were against you this time and there is only so much you can do to make the proverbial "silk purse..."

Cheers

With the exception of the elevator and slats (not the flaps), this photo is actually a little softer than I would submit. It's beside the point, but that could easily be cleaned up.

I do agree with not shooting just "to get that shot on A.net".

I think that is a very good idea, and I would encourage everyone who wants to raise concerns about a photo rejection to not post in the heat of the moment, but make sure you are calm, cool and collected before commiting yourself to words.

The issue has been well explained from both sides, and I am inclined to lock this thread so that it doesn't descend into an argument about something which has already been cleared up. However, I have been asked to allow it to remain as there could still be room for constructive discussion. As such, I'll leave it open, but please keep it constructive.

There are some awesome pictures on a.net taken in poor lighting conditions. Some of them recent additions, so if these other photogs can shoot in such conditions and have shots accepted, why should you be held to lower standards? It's a Bmibaby 737, I'm sure they are easy to find in your neck of the woods.

Quoting A340600 (Thread starter):

There isn't a lot that goes into rejecting a picture. I'm sure screeners know quality almost instantly when looking at a shot so yes, rejections (and acceptances) are done "just like that." BTW, your picture has jaggies on the wing and the registration seems blurry.

Quoting A340600 (Thread starter):
I have had a lot of patience and never emailed screeners angrily or posted here like some.

So you're just gonna up and leave over one shot because you think your shot is awesome and the people who actually call the shots don't? Now THAT sounds like you're being the poster whom you claim not to be.

Here's a novel concept: have you considered appealing?

Honestly, I think that an appeal would result in another rejection. The shot is a great try considering the conditions at the time, but quality is lacking.

I am not trying to be hurtful, just trying to save you from another rejection.

There will be other shots, better weather, more acceptances. Don't worry.

And yes the tail is a bit blurry (adds some extra speed IMO) and there are some sharpening issues.....but it is still a great shot and we all like to see great shots so its a shame that the photo is not added to the db.

Sam, when I read your post I thought this has to be a very good pic but when looking at it it's a clear rejection. I had better shots rejected and don't care too much about it.
You are young and have a lot time to learn, shoot and get pics accepted....

I know how lucky you were when you got your 350D because I got mine the same time. But for what reason did you bought the expensive (still for some of us) camera? To get pics on Anet? For having better pics with your hobby?

Maybe you can visit the other site and upload there.

I'm sure you'll have more pics added in the future if you do them for the fun about your hobby and not standing in the field and thinking about Anet.

I used to have FujiFinepix S602Z and got over 400 photos accepted with it!!
and you know it was very difficult to shoot with it since you have to zoom before the a/c arrives infront of you and it was not very fast either between one shot or another....it was a good camera for that time before the DSLR went out!

The problem with a pan shot while the airplane is not right in front of you, flying in a straight line from left to right or vice versa, is that to the camera the tail or the nose is flying faster. This will almost always cause motion blur to either part of the plane. I thing it is explained sometime ago in this forum.

I do like the shot however.

Honestly, I think that an appeal would result in another rejection. The shot is a great try considering the conditions at the time, but quality is lacking.

Indeed, I quite agree. Though it is a great shot, the quality is not A.net standard and rightly so got rejected.

There, back to myself,

I'm usually fine. I don't know if it was even the drink. I just wasn't with it last night,

I flew on this bird last October from Cardiff to Edinburgh.....awesome flight and we took off in the worst rain storm I have ever flown in.

BTW cool photo. Don't worry about rejects, I've had beautiful photos that have been used in magazines rejected here......some of the screeners get a bit to critical and loose sight of any other factors that go into a good and or interesting photo.

Absolutely!! Maybe Mike can't spell "lose" .. but then he is American Big grin but what he says about screeners losing sight of the real world might apply!
If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

Sam, having read most of the to-ing and fro-ing on here I have to say that although I like the shot, and appreciate the difficulties in it's execution, it isn't really up to current A.net standards.

However, having said that, if you go away now and think about what you did, how you did it and what may have caused the rejection reasons, then I am sure the next time you grab a shot like it, it will be as near perfect as makes no differrence.

And don't worry about the screeners, they aren't really human! Johan made them in a big tank somewhere North of Lapland!!  wink   stirthepot  Big grin

Having said that, they do a damn difficult and mostly thankless job so be nice and feed them the odd gem and they'll be happy! Big grin

If you caught a bolt of lightning right through the centre and behind the aircraft, I reckon it would definitely be accepted.
I love taking these photos on overcast days. I just don't upload them as I know they will be rejected. All the color and contrast gets washed out. However, if I catch something extremely rare happening to or around the aircraft on a cloudy day, then there is a huge probability it will get accepted.
