Urgent Farnborough Photography Tips Needed!

Tue Jul 18, 2006 8:37 pm

On Thursday this week, I'll be making my first visit to Farnborough air show (with a trade-day ticket someone gave me). This is my first time at a major air show! This is a rare, maybe lifetime, opportunity for me, and the bonus is that I am already here in London as a US student, making this much more feasible for me.

So I need some tips on how to make the most of it and get good photos at the airshow. The camera I use is a Fuji FinePix S5600 with 10X optical zoom lens (equivalent to 380mm).

Some questions:

1) Will my camera be sufficient to take most photos (static display shots, flying display of A380, etc)?
2) Will I be able to get close to any static-display aircraft? Will I be able to get photos (eg. side-on shots) of aircraft on static display? Will the aircraft be lined up so people can walk past and around them and get photos?
3) Will any of the civil aircraft (especially the Airbus A380, A340, and others) be open for interior viewing; if so, would interior shots be permitted?
4) Would I be able to pick up any aircraft manufacturer literature (I'm especially interested in the A380 and the B773ER, for example)?
5) What time each day does the A380 do its flying display? I would LOVE to see it in action!

Please give me any tips on photographing at the airshow and how to make the most of this rare, lifetime opportunity!

Most of all, I am most interested in seeing (and photographing) the A380 face-to-face!

Thanks in advance for any airshow photo tips, first-timer advice, etc!

They are normal put into groups and parked very close to each other.

I don't know if trade tickets allow people to go over to the A346 and A388, because they are normally parked over the other side of the runway.

Then don't worry if the photos will be acceptable for here. Just enjoy the show and take the best photos you can of what ever you like.

I haven't been to Farnborough yet but my old Olympus C-740 with a 380 mm equivalent zoom same as yours was never quite good enough for flying displays at airshows. You should be OK with the A380 but not, I would expect, military fast jets.

The A380 is on the public side of the runway, however - it is only open to people with invitations.

I mananged to get in a couple of the aircraft yesterday, however not the 777 or 380!

I got the the Fuji Finepix S9500 which has 10x optical zoom lens as well and got some pretty decent shots at Fairford last weekend though sometimes you can't in as tight as you like especially on the fast jets, it all depends on what line they take zooming past you. Have a great day.

As you are going to be inside the Fence at Farnborough.

You will be able to take Photos of the Aircraft which will make your stay in the UK be Memorable.

This was taken by my friend yesterday from just out side the fence at the Swan Public house!

Henry,

It's a 24hr stoppage by signallers from 12:00 on Fri. Will pretty much stop everything other than where large power signalboxes can be manned by managers and a limited service will be provided.

Best to check.

Regards

John

South West Trains will be running a skeleton service on Saturday to Farnborough, they are announcing timings tomorrow. I was going to go on Saturday but decided to go Sunday instead due to the strike.

I wish you luck but if it was me and I had a choice of days it would be Sunday and Not Friday/Saturday!

Just means the display coordinators have reserved 8 minutes per slot (including takeoff and landing).
Bit short for some maybe, but should give decently fast action (no dozens of flybys of each aircraft).

Very nice. Quick question, how long does it take to get from both of Farnboroughs' stations (North and Main) to the site?

Well, today, I made my first visit to Farnborough!

With my S5600, I shot about 30 photos of the A380 alone! (The A380 was my target and my personal highlight of the show). Plus, I was treated by Airbus to a tour of their A380 cabin mockup--and yes, I took about 11 or so shots of that, too.

I tried shooting some of the other flying displays (Red Arrows and other fighter displays), but no dice. Those little fighters are too fast and nimble for my S5600 to capture, and the photos came out small and blurry, so I deleted them. But I got some good ground shots of some of the fighters and some other interesting aircraft, including one of those triangular UFO-like UAVs.

Another very interesting aircraft I saw flying there was the V-22 Osprey, and I shot a few good photos of that.

For most of the photos, I shot from the fence separating the public area from the runway (this fence runs alongside the runway).

I'm going back Saturday to see what else I can capture.
