Taking Photos While Diving... SXM, Anyone?

Thu Jul 20, 2006 4:57 am

How would that be, taking a photo of an aircraft approaching SXM while the photographer is diving ? Would be interesting to see, don't you think ?

I think the camera in the water might be a problem but a nice idea......  Yeah sure

I know there's some waterproof one-use cameras, but I don't know if it will work. All water-to-air images I remember on documentals are too distort due to light refractions.

Might be easier to lay flat on the beach, take a picture, apply some cool photoshop effects afterwards and then upload it  Wink
Ummmm,no...

Waterproof cases tend to be very expensive, unless you have a really popular camera for which a large quantity of UW cases is produced. It's worthwhile checking out if you are a serious diver. But I think any water-to-air images will be indeed too much distorted for the purposes of this site.

Great idea, but the refraction of light and the movement of waves at the surface will make things rather difficult. I've tried it, not on aircraft in SXM but while diving in other places using this camera to get some cut in shots for my videos while surfacing. It doesn't work!

Being a diver, photographer and plane nut I've done it, but the results weren't that great. I used my Nikons V underwater camera which has limited lens capabilities. The max was 80 mm and the shots weren't that good. Good idea, but it didn't work out. Might be nice to try with a housing and D200 with a wide angle, but I haven't done that yet.

Much easier to take a shot while the aircraft is diving and the photographer is approaching, instead of the other way round.

I've got a housing for my Canon S80 which i use mainly for diving/snorkling shots.

If my photography goes further towards water photography i may get a housing for my 1d but they do run to big bucks and can only really cater for smaller and shorter lenses.
