Not sure if I will be out this weekend but you never know. You will love the extra reach the 400mm gives you but check it is a sharp at that length when you get it.

P.S. My first post seemed to duplicate itself !!

Ian,

Congrats on the new glass. Excellent choice. I admit, it's performance was somewhat lacking on the 300D, but since using it on my 20D and 30D, I can say with some certainty it wasnt the lens. The 300D is a nice kit don't get me wrong, but, the AF on the 20D and 30D is far superior. It's been spot-on with my new bodies. The only negative feelings I have toward the lens is the speed, but, a steady hand and IS help a lot.  Wink

Just a suggestion. Once you do sell your 70-300mm, you might want to put your $$ earned toward something a bit faster. Maybe pick up a Canon 200mm F/2.8 L! I say this not knowing what your kit looks like, of course maybe you are good to go already.

Keep up the great work.

Congratulations, Ian. I can't wait to see how you are going to manage to use 100mm widest for approach shots of (for example) 747s on short final for runway 27L.  duck

Nonetheless, have fun with the glass!

I have planned to buy that kind of glass next year... I hope it will still be in production...  Smile

Definately a down side, I use the Sigma EX 100-300 and although I love the lens 100mm is just too long quite often and my small lens is the 24-70 so I get frustrated by the 70-100mm gap I have personally, may get a 70-200 and 1.4x to replace my 100-300 for this very reason.

Don't count on it. I recently saw something about a 2.8 version of this lens in the near future... It was in this very forum now that I think about it!  duck

Ian bought his off me so I can answer.
It is a superb lens, very bright and sharp. The focusing is a little noisy when you are used to USM but it is fast and precise.
So why did I get rid of it ?
The problem I found was that it was not wide enough when fitted to a camera with a 1.6 factor. If all you photograph is aviation then the 24mm end is likely to be fine, but I bought the Canon 17-40L which is a better walk around lens for me when I am doing my non-aviation.
I have to say that I cannot detect the slightest difference between the two lenses in sharpness.
