Canon 70-200mm F4L (+1.4X Converter)

Thu Jul 27, 2006 4:12 pm

Hi all,

I currently use Sigma EX 24-70 and 100-300 and really like both although I am finding the gap between 70mm and 100mm ever-more frustrating combined with only having 100mm on the short end of my large lens can also be restrictive, especially at the airports I shoot and my non-av photography.

I've heard nothing but good things about the 70-200mm f4L but I was wondering how much image quality decreases by when you put a Canon 1.4x converter on as if I get the 70-200 having a 1.4x would be useful to shoot at around 300mm or so as and when required.

Finally I still have a Sigma EX 2x converter and I realise that would degrade quality quite a bit does anyone know if it is physically useable with the Canon 70-200?

If anyone has any samples with the 70-200 +1.4x that would be great too and thanks in advance

The quality of course will suffer a bit. Is it affordable, that only you can tell. But for me it's still ok.

Here's one sample taken with D30:

I'm not sure about the Sigma EX 2x TC, but the 70-200/4L can autofocus with the Kenko 2x TC. Surprisingly, this will happen rather accurately and fast! They say that the 350D for instance shouldn't be able to auto focus with smaller max. aperture than f/8. The Canon TCs tell the camera that they actually exist where as the other brands attached between the lens and body pass the real maximum aperture of the lens. So: AF won't work on this lens with a Canon 2x TC, but with the others it will.  Wink

Ben,

I bought the 70-200 F/4 L when I was in the US at the beginning of the year, I have no complaints with it at all.

I bought a 1.4 Extender a few weeks back, mainly for Farnborough. Even though I never got to use it much, I still know that you can get cracking results from the combination. Also, you still retain AF.

Hope this helps, if you need any more advice - get in contact with me. You know where I am!

Thanks for the info so far, Simon i''ll chat on MSN or drop you a mail soon if thats alright.

One other thing, is there any discernable difference between the mk1 and mk2 1.4x converter?
