Spotting In Europe.....

Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:59 pm

Hi All,

I have finally got confirmation that I'll be heading north. I'll be over there for work, but I will have some time outside that for spotting.

Heading over to support a very good client (a very decent airline which I won't mention).

But I may as well mention the dates now, because there are a few people who owe me either a beer, or a local tour  Smile
There are others who probably one day want a Sydney tour, so any kindness offered will only be reciprocated when you eventually get to Sydney.

The other reason for posting is to query weather during the time I'm coming. I suspect that leaving my sunny shore, I'll have to be prepared for the worst.

I have to be in London between 13th-24th November. But I'll probably be there 2 weeks leading up to this. So possibly 29th October through 26th November.

Should be cold, but good.

I think I'd probably end up spotting in a couple of areas through Europe. I want to get up to MAN and certainly across again to AMS. I haven't yet been to FRA or ZRH. Would love to get across to MAD.

Any other airports...? Would love to get some suggestions.

Glenn

G'day Glenn
A small suggestion.
Go via Tokyo you will certainly not regret it with excellent weather that time of year and more 74's than you can point ten sticks at.
Helps break up a long trip to.
Hope you get some great weather at AMS like i did.
Cheers

Glenn,
MAN is a must but the weather at that time of the year is unpredictable (being polite). If the weather is kind to you, it is an excellent time to visit. Wheels are essential to get to the best spots though the airport is very accessible by train and I am sure there are any number of people around MAN who would happily assist.
We have things over here called scarves, gloves hat and warm coats. Search the Internet and you should be able to find them in Oz but if not, wait until you get over here and you will not have much trouble.
I will do my damndest to help and meet up somewhere over here.

I love the autumn/winter months for photography. Throughout the day you have no problems with high sun and everything is just much crisper than summer. Weather is a bit fickle (remember last time you were in AMS? You had 4 seasons in one day!  ), but if you catch a good day, it's just wonderful.
Just an example, a day in November that was particularly good last year:

Glenn,

If you are in the smallest country of the EU (Luxembourg) with one of the quietest international airports (about 80 scheduled movements per day) I shall be very glad to show you the spotting places - and buy you a beer to thaw you out afterwards.

If I thought that was cold and miserable, then I'm in for a new definition of cold then.

It's winter here in Sydney, and I think it's freezing....

I think you mentioned the places to have a look at when in Europe. I mean VIE, LIS, CDG , etc, etc are also nice, but with AMS, FRA, MAN, LHR and ZRH you will get excellent traffic and even more important: Good and easy photospots! MAD hat gorgeous traffic, but the spots really dont appeal to me.
So, if you deciding to go to ZRH, drop me a line, I will see what I can do for you, we could get airside on a ramptour, if you come on a weekend and our photoclub does a tour (chance are pretty high). Otherwise I would be happy to show you around.

Maybe CGN and DUS on the way to AMS also ?

Or you may fly south to Tenerife, Lanzarote, etc. Weather will be perfect at that time of the year.

Ralf

P.S: if you are interested in aviation museums (Speyer, Sinsheim, Hermeskeil are near) you may also consider to come to FRA.

Well Mr Stewart,

I believe I owe you both a beer and a tour!

I still have some holiday left this year so you are more than welcome to stay at mine and we could have some trips out to Manchester and London or anywhere else that you fancy.

Mr Sharps also lives in my neck of the woods now and he also owes you the same.

Drop me an e-mail to simon.gregory1@virgin.net or ill catch you on MSN.

Not sure that the UK tour or weather can quite live up to the superb Sydney tour but we will give it a go.

Regards

I continue to rave about the beer and desert that I had whilst in Vienna last time. Caught up with Peter Unmuth and Andy Graf. The company was awesome. And that desert I rave about... the taste is still on my mind and I have been hopeless in trying to replicate it.
If Peter reads this... what is the name of that desert again?

Hola Ander!

Hey my previous comment holds true... it's a complete myth that Australians are all about beer. We certainly produce better wines than beers (great climate - similar to Spain in parts).

I'll certainly love to head to Spain to have some wine. Can I fit it all in?

I hope to be starting Spanish lessons soon. So if I did come to Spain, it would also help in with practice.

Hi:

I would be very happy to meet up with you in london and go around LHR together. If you let me have the dates you are in the UK for sure I can try to arrange a weekend off and maybe go up to MAN together, or even somewhere like AGP or MAD.

Either way it would be great to meet fellow A.netters, share plane stories and tips.

BTW the suggestion of TFS, ACE or even LPA is an excellent one as the weather in the Canaries at that time of the year is very good and there are some good movements as its starting to hit the peak of the winter sun season there. I lived in LPA for many years and I know the best places to shoot there, and might even be able to arrange a tour of Gando AB if you give me enough time.

Regards.

I haven't read all posts here. Just one thing: Late autumn is indeed for photography. No hassle with high sun, and - at least in ZRH - ideal sun for the noon batch of departing widebodies.

You can always drop me a line, if you plan to get to ZRH.

If you go to Spain, you may consider Madrid for the traffic (but there is only a few "good" spot places) and Malaga (AGP) or Palma de Mallorca (PMI) due to the charter traffic specially during the week-ends as in autumn during the week it may be a little bit boring...

Personally if your coming to the UK its all about visiting Southend (SEN) I mean you get over 1 movement a day plus a couple of stored aircraft.

I mean c'mon, forget MAN/LHR/LGW and don't get my started on the IOM. SEN is the place to be..

Don't forget to visit BRU.
It is not as busy as my homebase Amsterdam but you will see plenty of unique aircraft.

For someone who doesn't visit europe that often I don't think BRU is that interesting.

Hi Glenn,

If you would want to see some military activity instead of airliners  Smile , don't forget to visit Florennes AFB (Belgium) during TLP activity.

For participating aircraft: http://tlp.scramble.nl/

Best regards,

Walter

I want second helpings  Smile

Looks like my trip is extended slightly. I've confirmed that my dates are following:

Saturday 21 October - SYD - LHR
Saturday 25 November - LHR - SYD

Work will be in the last two weeks. The first two in particular are up for grabs with spotting.

Want to keep my budget as low as possible! If there is anyone who can help me out with a place to stay  Smile It would certainly be returned as a favour in Sydney (even if it's not with me). I am clean, well mannered and clean my own dishes :P - Completely house trained - or at least as well as an Aussie guy can be  Smile
