Best "friend Spotter" Airports In The USA

Wed Aug 09, 2006 6:47 pm

Hello,

I'm planning to go for one week (9 days) to the US in September (week of the 18thSep) for some spotting and I would like to know which are the best airport in terms of traffic, spotting places, weather and specially airport where do may don't have problems with the police.

I have sometimes read post here in a.net about problems with the autorities and I don't want to have problems as my english (BTW) is not very performant

Are there holidays during this week (18th Sep)? I'm asking that as I'm planning to go with ID tickets...

Brgrds from Spain.

Well, lets see. I will throw out some random names, but it might not be the best time of year to vist because of things like heat (Phoenix) or lack of traffic (Jackson)...

LAX - never a hassle on Imperial Hill

SJC - minimal hassle from police, traffic gets boring

SFO - minimal hassle, but I hear it isn't what it used to be in terms of photo ops

PHX - never been hassled there, heat haze might be a problem this time of year

LAS - never hassled, again, heat might be a problem

PDX - a few police run ins, but nothing bad, traffic gets boring

SEA - not many places to spot, lots of police, not worth the hassle in my opinion

YVR - not the US, but a great airport, never a hassle, lots of things to do/see

SLC - not what it used to be, but still good, minimal police, gets boring after a while

PHL has minimal hassle lately. We have a few good spots around the airport, depending on which runways they're on.

My best spotting place is LAS. I never get hasseled and I even wave to the cops and airport ops.

Heat will ease up by the middle of Sept but there are still times and places now where heat is not an issue. All my pics on this site where taken during the summer with temps over 100.

IAH and HOU generally good, but August anywhere in the Southern half of the US is going to be very hot with lots of haze.

FLL - good
OPL - good with ramp access if you ask nicely
MIA - OK, but getting poorer.

PHX - very good.

My favorite so far is DCA. Plenty of traffic (no heavies though Sad), great spotting location at gravelly point. I've only been there a couple of times but there was never a hassle with the police. Actually, last time I was there there was a cop parked in the lot just watching.

Have fun,

I can vouch for DCA/BWI/IAD as great places for some spotting and each having distinct differences in traffic ... IAD for heavies/BWI for cool charters and heavies/DCA for flat out great locations at Gravelly point and the Marina. But one that hasn't been mentioned yet is MSP which on the parking garage seems to be a great spot and plenty of traffic..although its all mainly NWA but hey its still fun in my opinion. I've never been on the garages but when i connected i spent time in the observation room which offerred great views.

BNA seems to be hassle free and offers some great spots from what I see, I've never been there so maybee the locals there can help you out. Not the best in terms of Intl. traffic but it stays pretty busy.

HOU doesn't offer as much in the range of locations and the constant barrage of WN can get tiresome. Some nice bizjets, though.

It kind of started to get back to "normal" but looking back at today's events, it might be changing very quickly. Who knows.

Good luck.

KSAN is very spotter friendly, the downside is there is not a huge variety of traffic. Mornings you'll get a couple of Delta & Hawaiian heavies, Air Canada, AeroMex, Jet Blue, and Frontier. Evenings a couple of FedEx heavies and maybe another cargo carrier if you're lucky. Other than that a constant stream of Southwest, Alaska, United, and American traffic...oh yeah, and lots of commuters...

I just returned from a trip to TPA. Several great spotting sites and I didn't see a cop the entire time.

Hey Paulianer I live Near MSP i can try to meet you one of those days.

The best place for good shots is in the parking ramp. Post road is good but it has a 10 ft. high perimeter fence and some blast deflectors that get in the way.

Let me know when the date gets closer

my email is Insanemembrane123@hotmail.com

Thnx

Hey, Tobi, I hope I can catch you in MSP but as for spotting advice I always go to the Fort Snelling National Historic site and there is a fence right next to the runway. As for security I had a sheriff deputy drive right past me twice and a National Gaurd pilot was using the area to spot at the same time; in the winter they even plow right up to the fence. The problem with that runway is that the heaviest thing you will see are 757's from either NWA or CO, also there is a rather small window of opportunity to shoot them as there are large trees on either side of you.

Thank you.

Hi All,

I recommend Spotters Wiki as a way to find spotting information about some of the airports you might be planning to visit. I'm sure the airliner spotting community would also appreciate any updates you might be able to add about your home airports.

Regards,

Edward

A lot of you keep saying "boring traffic" or whatever. Remember, he's from Europe, so a WN 733 or B6 A320 would be oooooolala for him. A few months ago at FLL, I saw a guy RUN/BOLT to his ladder for a jetBlue A320 in the original tail scheme. Foreigner.  wink

I've never been hassled at PDX, on the garage or Marine Drive, either. Traffic isn't as much as some other places, but it has great viewing spots along the runways, under final approach, and overview from the top of the garage. And for someone from outside the U.S., catching just about every Horizon Air plane in one day might be a treat.
