Howdee all,

I am working on buying a new camera. A Canon EOS 20D with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens from Amazon.com for $1100 USD.Link I have some experience with DSLR cameras and wondering if it is the right camera for this purpose.

What is the purpose you didn't tell us.
If the purpose is to take Aircraft pics then yeh nothing wrong with the 20d but at the moment you can get a 30d for the same price and its better in terms of features.

What are the extra features with the 30D. I haven't looked that hard but I'm sure there is something for the extra $200 USD. I am mainly looking to use it for aircraft pictures but also for family, etc...
Thx for the quick reply

If you go here, http://dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos30d you will find a comprehensive review of the 30D, the first part of which is a feature comparison with the 20D. Is the difference worth $200? Only you can judge.
If you factor in the increased resale value of the 30D the decision should not be too hard.

Cheers

I own the 20D and am immensely happy with it. You won't regret buying this equipment.

That said, if you can buy a 30D for only a couple hundred more, I'd do that.

Hi there,

The 20D is a nice piece of weaponry, however it was quickly superseded by the 30D. Both cameras are fantastic it seems, the extra money for the 30D is worth it.

I'm currently borrowing a brand new 20D from my father, as it's his backup, but I will be looking to purchase a new body myself at some point in the future.

Good luck with your choice....

Well, that would be true if Canon doesn't come out with a 40D next week!!!  scared

Exactly  Wink

I think I'll work on the decision between the 30D and 20D.

I don't expect a "40D" anytime soon although it is fairly inevitable.
In any case 30D would still have higher resale than 20D.

Basically, in order of usefulness, spot metering, RGB histograms, allegedly improved autofocus algorithms (in AI-SERVO mode I think), Picture Styles (canned presets) when shooting JPEGs. Oh yeah, an oh-so-useful direct print button.

You can buy a 20D body for around $1,000 or less. Don't get the 18-55 lens unless it's cheaper as a kit (when I bought my 20D, right after the 30D was announced but before it was available, the body+lens kit was actually $20 cheaper), since you're probably not going to use it.

Thanks guys,

I ordered the 30D with a 18-55 lens. Now I have some work to do learning about the camera.

I wonder how many 30D users actually will use that?

I use that on my 350D, so will be using it when/if I end up getting a 30D.

Canon has an 18 month release cycle. Meaning they replace that model every 18 months, however, they never made a large upgrade between the 20D and 30D, so they'll probably replace the 30D after a year. But definitely not before or during photokina.

I think the 30D will be a short lived model, like the D60, which only lasted a year. I think at PMA next February, they will at least update to the same sensor and anti-dust system as the recently announced 400D/Rebel XTi. The 30D could probably be more accurately called the 20DmkII.
