Is This Image Good Enough ...

Wed Aug 16, 2006 9:02 pm

... to be submitted for inclusion on A.Net ?

I don't want to waste the screeners time by submitting something below par.

It is one of my first attempts.

I'm thinking the port tail plane is a little too dark and merges in with the pine trees in the background - but really, I have no idea !  Smile

All comments appreciated.

Taken with a Panasonic DMC-FZ30 (ISO 100, F5.4, 1/640)

I cant comment on the Quality but the shot looks unlevel and cropped too far .
Try cropping a little tighter and level the shot .
Not a bad first attempt but it needs work.

Thanks Alan. I appreciate your assessment and kind comment. I've tried to alter the image as you have suggested in Photoshop CS2.

The result is below:

Graham,

You need to keep the aspect ratio to something like 3:2.
Within Photoshop set the crop tool to be 3 x 2 in the boxes, but don't enter a dpi value.

Best of luck,
Ian.

Try and get rid of a few minor dust spots above the plane. Or am i the only one who can see them?

I don't think its salvagable either (for here anyway). But a good attempt and with a great aircraft.

Just out of interest, where was that GAM beast taken?

The second edit is still a little unlevelled and has issues regarding the aspect ratio, as Ian said earlier on the thread. I would try from scratch, but I don´t think it can be saved either. Keep posting anyway! Don´t be discouraged, at the beginning it might be hard work to get your first shot accepted.

Cheers,

Lanas.-

Thanks for the comments gentlemen.

The 'dust spots' are actually a flock of birds spooked by the immediate departure of a Cessna 310 (out of shot) from RWY 23.

The GAM beast was photographed last week at Corowa airport. The owner flies the aircraft to Corowa once a week, where he has certain business interests in the area. The aircraft is sheltered in a purpose built hangar on the airport.

This is my attempt at trying to salvage the image using 3 x 2 cropping and unsharp mask - with birds (dust spots) in the background.

And again ... levelled with flock of birds removed using clone tool.

Much better! Congrats!
Still unlevelled in my opinion. Try some CCW rotation.

For some really annoying reason, I can't seem to edit my post above to re-insert the image which now shows the dreaded red 'X' and 'dead' link. Can anyone tell me why you can't edit your own post? I was able to do it on one occasion and now it won't allow me to do it again!  mad

Here is the image, levelled with flock of birds removed using clone tool.

And you've just admitted that? I wouldn't even bother uploading this image now...  Yeah sure

I guess the screeners would note alterations anyway?

Why would it pose such a problem, when A.net provide a link for improving images - which give detailed instructions on 'levelling' and 'cloning' techniques using Photo Elements - specifically for uploads to this very website?

If they don't want people to use these procedures, why provide the link? Sounds kind of weird to me.

No it's not, that's about 1000x better than your photo. Bird's are natural, he couldn't help them being there - lamp-posts aren't, you knew they were there.

Mmmm be careful with the cloning. It´s not illegal but you must use it accurately. You´ve left two light blue spots that are easy to see.
Try not removing the birds. The ones on the far right might be the most suitable for cloning, but if I were you I´d leave them all.

Thanks Lanas,

I think you might be right. I'm not big into cloning images - I'd rather submit something that is natural and does not require extensive image manipulation. Apart from levelling and some sharpening (if absolutely necessary) - I'd rather leave the images alone.

I just need to think a bit more and be conscious of my situational awareness when taking photographs.

Lanas, I note you live in Argentina ? Is it at all possible to obtain some images of Argentinian Air Force and Navy (Armada) aircraft? In particular - the Mirage III ? I love Argentinian military aircraft  Smile

Cheers mate

Yes, I live in Argentina. There must be some pics on this db. I haven´t checked, really. Have you? If not I can get you some from an Argentine aviation site. Just let me know.

Cheers!
