Nikkor 80-400VR...mode 1 Or 2

Mon Aug 21, 2006 10:43 pm

Could anyone out their please explain the difference between the VR modes 1 and 2, and which mode you find best for our purpose?
I have very recently obtained the lens and I'm still not sure even after much research!
Many thanks for any guidance/advice offered?!

Best regards...Paul. confused

Vibration reduction is turned on and off via a three position switch on the left side of the lens. VR mode 1 reduces vibration from the moment the shutter is lightly pressed and the meter is activated. This allows you to see the effect in the viewfinder. Mode 2 only activates VR when the shutter is fully depressed.

Paul, I use Mode 2 simply because I dislike the view when the VR kicks in - the image seems to jump slightly and I find it offputting.

Best thing to do is take it out someplace and experiment. Try not to use it anywhere you could get arrested for being a pervert or peeping tom though!! Big grin

The only other advice I would give would be contrary to what you have gotten already. Mode 1 allows the VR to stabilize better before the shutter fires. I have read that using mode 1 gives better "results" as the system has more time to stabilize the picture.

If you can live with the "jumpy" viewfinder image, mode 1 will give better results.

Use mode 1, stabilisation when shutter button half depressed always as it takes VR several seconds to fully stabilise. I have not seen mode1/mode2 on any other VR Nikkor. I believe 80-400 f4.5-5.6 was the first VR Nikkor.

Forget about mode 2.

My copy did not have a jumpy image using mode 1 the image should be static during mild vibration due to camera shake. It actually works very well in windy conditions.

I use it as follows:

Jets and fast moving objects Aperture Priority f8 setting VR off above 1/500th second.
Prop aircraft Shutter Priority set between 1/200 - 1/30(depends on what effect I want) VR on mode 1 and pan with action.

I haven't used mode 2 as yet.
On the 70-200 VR lens the second mode is used when you are in a vehicle and need VR on both vertical as well as horizontal axis. Correct me if I am wrong and this doesn't apply to the 80-400 lens?

Cheers,
Colin
