Photo Editing Software - Free!

Tue Sep 12, 2006 4:25 pm

Hi Guys,

Just read an article in a Magazine about some free photo editing software called "The Gimp".

Gimp has layers, different filters etc just as photoshop does.

Anyone wishing to give the software a go, it can be downloaded from their website http://www.gimp.org.

Thought it would be good for people looking to NOT spend thousands of dollars on PhotoShop or less and a hundred on PhotoShop Elements.

For those that do try, be sure to read some of the tutorials and documentation as it seems to full of many useful features.

Have fun,

Martin

I've heard lots about Gimp. but I've yet to try it. Like all GNU projects, it's bound to have some very cool features. I'd guess at the very least it will be more featured than Elements.

At the moment I'm still using PS 7.0, as that is what I know, but I'll consider trying Gimp at some point.

Thousands of Dollars on Photoshop is a bit of an exaggeration, don't you think?  Smile

I have used Gimp on several occasions. It is good, after using PS for so long I found it a pain trying to navigate my way through. It is a whole new learning experience and to be honest I couldn't be bothered to spend hours trying to get results. I have read it is as powerful as PS and equally effective. For someone who hasn't used PS and jumps straight into Gimp would probably find it easier.
But for free you can't go wrong

Regards
Mark

I'm not sure if it's still available, but a while ago I saw a free program by the name of "Gimpshop". It was based on Gimp, but had a Photoshop layout. You know, all the menus, tools, etc. It's probably been pulled by now.

Thats why I bought it up. Thought it would be easier for newbies to download Gimp first. Would be a great piece of software for entry into photo editing. And as said, its FREE!!

So is Picasa. It's analogous in function to iPhoto.

Picasa just won't cut it for whats needed to get pics accepted here lets say. If you want a photo organiser, then use it for that, its great. I use it. But not for advanced photo editing.

I thought both of these were meant to organise your photos, not edit them?

That's mostly true. Both of them do have some "editing" functionality, but it's really meant for novice snapshots taken with a $200 P & S.

There's something I want to clear up for any newcomers to photography that might be reading this (can I log community service hours?). Photoshop CS2, bar none, is the best photo-editing app on the market. Anybody who's serious about photography and photo editing will have or want CS2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is the default app for any photo pro or serious non-pro.

The first version of Aperture was a pretty well-publicized flop. It sucked so much that Apple fired the project manager and the engineering manager. That said, I sincerely hope that Apple keeps trying, because if there's one thing this market segment needs; it's competition. Hey, we might even see lower prices! Shock! Horror!  biggrin

PS CS2 is definitely a great package, I currently use PS7 and it's "what I know" so to speak. I will be having a copy of CS2 on my Mac along with Aperture so I'll see how it goes!  Wink

Back on the subject of the free editing software, I'd love to see more stuff like this in the future!

I gave Gimp a try last year, but found using the tools to be slightly complicated and the quality wasn't quite as good as what you'd expect from Photoshop on resizing.

Tim.

They face tough competition from Adobe Lightroom, which even in its Beta stage outshines Aperture.
