Takeoff (color) Noise

Wed Sep 27, 2006 10:23 am

Hey guys,

Today I was shooting takeoffs at SEA; I am wondering if this photo, as an example, is too 'grainy'?

Thanks!

Yes, and soft too.

I agree with Jeff. You *might* be able to salvage it with some selective sharpening along the edges, but you'll have to apply some noise reduction to the non-edge parts of the photo.

Noise reduction is kind of a bad word around here, so I'm not going to go into that further.

Thanks guys; I think I was too far away from the airport. Sadly, it seems somewhat difficult to find a decent spotting place around SEA.

Isn't there a little coffee stand just south of the airport that you can watch planes in? Or do they shoo people off?

Huh, I have never seen the stand. I was near the training office today and they asked me to leave; so I went to the SPU park area. It isn't too bad of an area though for my lens it is a stretch.

... and I also forgot I left my camera in auto ISO from when I was playing with it before.

Perhaps it is just be but on a clear blue sky the noise is very noticeable between ISO 100 and 500 on my D80 - oops.

HOw much did you crop this file? A lot? Was the sky more than 60% of the shot? That could really affect the way the camera meters it.

Try adding some exposure compensation when your shot has a lot of sky in it. Add +0.3. That will probably do the trick. Or, get closer to the subject.

I agree with JeffM. The image looks either soft or blurry, especially the nose and the tail.
