Quality Help Please...

Wed Sep 27, 2006 1:24 pm

I had to take this with my 100-400 L IS + 1.4extender... Ended up being 560mm (?) plus a crop. As a result, the quality isn't too high. However, it's a pretty neat shot IMO. I'm kinda standing on the fence right now because I'd really like to see this shot accepted, but I definitely don't want my acceptance rate to go any lower... if it doesn't stand a chance, I don't feel like taking another rejection. haha. So what do y'all think? Keep it in, or take it out? Oh, and of course, any suggestions for improvement are always welcome!

As always, thanks for the help!

I really like the shot, even if the quality is a little poorer than expected. What have you done editing wise?

I love the shot from a fluid dynamics perspective as well. Note the wing vortices.

Ya I mentioned the vortices in my caption... that's one reason I love shooting from this spot.  Smile

As for editing: rotation, crop, saturation, contrast, resize, USM. Honestly, I can't remember exactly what... I edited it yesterday, and just did what looked good.

As it stands now, it looks a bit soft, but if you use some selective sharpening on parts of the plane, you may get it acceptable.

Hi Mike,

That is a really nice one. I think it's worth trying to improve it (as Harry pointed out), since it would be a great addition to the DB!  Big grin

Do you have an original file we can look at? I'd really like to look at the original and have a go at editing it.

The Bird is blurry - I'd say its got minimal chance of getting in or improved to be honest.

I took a look at it, and this is the result I got:

It looks a bit dark now that I look at it again, but you get the idea.

I just used lost of selective sharpening on areas I thought needed it, being careful not to overdue. If you take care with the sharpening it should come out ok. Let us know how you do.

I take back that statement. I've had a play with the image as I really like this one. I think that it can be made alot better. My edit came up quite ok!

Sorry about that! Hope it does well!

Don't link to JP here, you know the politics and what happened last time one did that...

This discussion will now be deleted in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

Oh, and I would have used one of the more properly exposed edits like newark777's....

Hi,

I agree with Martin
A/somewhere there is finger poised over the "thread delete" button
B/I too would have uploaded a more correctly "exposed" version.

What is this acceptance ratio BS, why is it so important that you will not upload to protect it? I just don't get this!

Cheers

Chris

Cuz after dropping down from 50-somethin % to 38%, and after they cut the upload limits in half, I only have 7 uploads left. lol. I'd rather that not drop down any lower.

And ya, Martin's version looks a ton better... that was a tough shot to process. I kinda got tired of it, and now like i said, im just waiting for the opportunity to take another one... Hopefully with better, Anet worthy results.

... better than two... with little hope of getting any more (even under best of circumstances) anytime soon.
