I Bought The 100-400mm!

Sat Sep 30, 2006 5:06 am

Well I finally went out and did it.... I bought the 100-400mm.  biggrin
I'm really excited and can't wait till it comes in, aswell I can't wait to upload some pictures taken with it onto A.net. Just to keep this thread relevant to the Photography Forum, what was it like when you got yours? How excited were you? Hows does it smell fresh out of the box?  biggrin

Very Excited

Hi Cal,

I bought my camera and lens at the same time. When I went to pick them up from the shop the first thing I wanted to do was look at the lens! I totally ignored the camera. Big grin

It's a superb lens and you will just love it. I've had it about a year now and it just never dissapoints!  Wink

Don't forget to get the Eclipse and sensor swabs. The lens is supurb in a word but has been a dust magnet. Have fun and enjoy!

Me either. I get the same amount with fixed lenses and twist zooms.

Some people believe everything they hear, especially when told on the internet by people they don't even know. One person might have once said 'dust pump' somewhere, people copied his claim without question and now it seems to have taken 'fact'-status... Weird.

Can't say enough good things about my 100-400. I wouldn't say the dust issues are any worse than most other lenses. Most of it simply accumulates by the constant changing of lenses. Picked up a second body so I don't have that problem much anymore! Congrats on the purchase and I'm sure you'll love it.

Thanks for the replies.
I too have heard the "Dust Pump" rumor, as I have done a lot of research on what lens to buy. If it truly increases the amount of dust on the sensor, or if there is no change is irrelevant. So you use a blower or swab it more often... oh well, I'm about to own what I, and many others think, is the greatest aviation lens. I can't wait to get out in the field and use it, be it on aviation, landscapes, birds, or any other applications. Being that I live a considerable distance from any major airport, I won't get to use it on any heavies anytime super soon. I will however get to take some great shots out at the airbase I work for. What did yous do when you first got your copy?

Thanks

Yes, I know that, I have been using one for almost three and a half years, do you own one?

I find it rather funny that people who own one for a year or less are telling us that they are dust magnets... These are mostly people that made the switch to digital at the same time they bought the 100-400 and thus they explain the higher dust attraction that DSLR's have by blaming the 100-400.

Hey Dan,

That's a cracking motorbike shot!  Wink Bad motive though since you chopped off the back wheel. Big grin

But yes, where it comes into it's own really is when doing close-ups, it beats the competition hands down. And I've never had a single problem with dust.

The "hand action"(did i say that.....ohjee  Smile )might be different but the resulting lens action is quite the same: grow, shrink, grow, shrink etc etc

My very own and very similar lens does have a rotation zoom but works best when used as push pule.......
The 100-400 will remain a "Dust Pump" of course........ just for the fun of it.

Well you convert it to CND funds and it can in some cases work out to over 2 grand.

Congrats on the new glass. Ive had it since '04 and its been great for the most part, recently the push/pull mechanism began to sieze up a bit. Seems others have had this issue as well. Just be aware it could happen down the road. Enjoy it.

I have the same problem Chad, bearings seizing up on me! I've sadly noticed though, that after 4 years she's taken a few specks of dust in between the elements. A wicked lens though, no matter what!

I brought this issue up with a guy I know at a photography shop and he said that he has never heardo this issue with any 100-400's he has sold and it something to do with 100-400 sold in the USA.

I have a good friend here that had to send his in to Canon to repair this issue, cost $180.00 to be fixed. Luckily I still have the Mack Warranty for 5 more months. Ill get mine sent in soon. Other than that, you are right, awesome lens.

My 100-400L lens arrived today from B & H! Time for another steep learning curve. My photography is much like my golf game. I wanted to get the fundamentals right before moving up in quality. That is why I don't get the long distance golf balls - they just go deeper into the woods. Just like I didn't see much value in getting a really good set of golf clubs until I got all I could out of the current set.

I have been pleased with the results of the Olympus C750 and my current Canon equipment. I expect the new lens to increase my versatility as well as quality.

Hey guys - I can inform you that Ben is a Nikon user so I don't know how he has developed this opinion apart from the hearsay that goes round regarding this lens.

I have used this lens for around a year and half now and I've noticed the bearings are seizing up which isn't the best news but it still works and I'm sure it will for the forseable.

Thanks..

Well it finally came in today! I didn't expect it to be that heavy, but I'm only used to my 18-55mm so..  Wink Also it smelled pretty good coming out of the box fresh. JK However we have been getting bad weather here and I haven't gotten to use it outdoors yet. Hopefully it clears up and I can get out and take some shots in the next few day. Thanks everyone for the replies.
