Will I Get Arrested For Spotting At SFO?

Sat Oct 07, 2006 9:14 pm

Hi guys:
Later this month i am going to be in SFO and i have read up about points for good spotting around the airport. One place is just off 101 on millbrae avenue. What i want to know is :
1. Should i land up there with my camera and take pics or will i get arrested?
2. Should i carry my passport along with him (since i am indian - but dont really look it)?
3. Is it illegal in california to spot?

LOL, are you kidding me? Being arrested for taking pictures? If a cop shows up, don't try to fight it, otherwise, you will probably land in the slammer like some HARDCORE photographers on this site, cooperate with the officer, you'll be fine and the worse that'll tell you is to leave. The Baysview park is a public park for everyone in the world. And no, it's not illegal for aviation photography in California or the U.S. Good luck to you!

People from SFO please tell me.. is this spot still good for spotting? or does it have a fence obstructing the view? Do let me know.

PS: are there any shots in the DB from this location?

...I can only talk of a my experience a couple of years ago....public car park adjoining the park, great unobstructed views, (300mm lens reqd.), my son and I spent many hours here on different days without any hassle at all, even though a few cops noticed us. As has been suggested, carry your passport and be cool if challenged and you should have no problems......enjoy!

Best regards...Paul. wink

None of the two locations described there will get you in trouble but heat haze may.

Don't know whether there's actually a sidewalk, but the distance itself is probably only a five minute walk. Take E. Millbrae Av towards the bay (not towards the hills), go over the 101 overpass, and cross across Bayshore Hwy / McDonnell Rd with the Westin hotel on your right and you're pretty much there. The benches that you can sit on are around the edge of the parking lot for the Marriott - you can't miss it. Put zip code 94030 (nearest zip code I know) into Multimap and you'll see where the CalTrain station (the black train logo) is in comparison to Bayshore.

To add:
Mornings until around noon are best for departures off the 1s. Lens requirements are up to 300mm for narrowbodies.
For the widebodies that use the 28s, you need a 500mm lens to get satisfactory results. Lighting is good for most of the day except early morning. No need to worry about heat haze as there is large body of water.

Here is a photo I took with my digital camera...not with my new DSLR camera I have.....I assure you... blush

note the comment:"Wanting to try something different, I took this photo over the 101 Expressway/Millbrae Avenue bridge of a NW 757-200 accelerating down RWY-1R. Little did I know I was going to be hassled by the Millbrae City Police in 5 minutes. It was still worth it!"

Even made the local papers.. spin

The angle was a bit unique..the only problem was I was on the wrong side of the bridge and being Pakistani and not shaving..well..lets just say I fit the "profile".. tongue

Aside from the episode mentioned above, I've dealt with a few police @ SFO (Millbrae), even undercover ones...all have been nice to me....

As long as you are doing nothing illegal, or not being at places you are not allowed to be, you have nothing to be concerned about...

Happy spotting... Smile
