Is This An Okay Setup?

Tue Oct 10, 2006 3:07 am

I am planning on buying the Canon 400D, (rebel XTi), plus the Sigma 170-500mm lens. I can get the camera body for 325, which extremely cheap, and the lens for $540. I'm planning on buying it frm royalcamera.com
Has anyone had any experience with this site. Since the prices are so low, I'm a bit nervous buying from them. Are they reliable? Second, is the setup i have now good? I have a canon 18-55 from my film SLR and I plan to use that on the Rebel.
Thanks

Ashwin

Apparently royalcamera.com is a scam/fraud company:

You will find more on Google...

The 400D is a good camera. I can't comment on the Sigma lens though, but for me personally a zoom starting at 170mm would be too much. It depends on where you're going to shoot (how far away from the airport).

I will definetly stay away from ths buyer. Warning to all out there: All the camera stores off of Shopcartusa.com are rip offs. I read reviews from each of their vendors, and each one is a scam. I guess I'll be buying mine from Onecall or someplace for much more.  Sad

Thanks for the replies, and I would like to get back on the other subject... Is that setup a decent one, or should I look into something else?

I never saw such many negative opinions. This shop is a pey..

Sigma 170-500mm lens

People using this lens are very happy with it. In my case I'd recommend you only original Prosumer lenses ( in Canon the L series...)

Cheers

Depending on your needs, I assume you are a beginner, the set up planned is totally ok. The 170-500 is certainly not the fastest and sharpest lens out there, but for the price (when buying it at www.bhphotovideo.com) you can't do anything wrong. Around 800mm focal length ain't that bad either.

I have used the 170-500 in the old days....Just do a search for Vasco Garcia / Boston Logan prior to 2001 and you"ll find plenty of shots taken with the 170-500mm. But be aware that back then no affordable DSLR was available, thus some of the images maybe lacking in quality.

Personally I have the Sigma 170-500mm not very impressed with it infact never used it for digital....I would say the L sens for Canon 100-400mm is much better
Is there any AF 400mm F2.8 for Nikon?

I own the 170-500 and just ordered a 400D five minutes ago. I've never had any problems with the Sigma. A lot of people talk bad about it, but in the year I've owned it I've never had a complaint.

Sorry if this comes off as a plugging post, that is not my intent.

Thanks for the posting the shots everyone. It really helps to see actual products. In no way do I consider this self plugging. It is extremely helpful. If others think it is wrong, then they need to seriously relax a little.
