Another Pre-screening Thread..

Mon Oct 16, 2006 3:28 am

Hi everyone.

Been a long time since I've uploaded photos to this site. Gave some a go about 2 weeks ago and many got rejected. I think I'm a biut rusty with editing at the moment  Wink .

I'd just like some advice on a few I have in the queue at the moment:

1) http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/ready/ZS-SAZ_FAJS25Aug_2.jpg
This was one of the photos that was rejected a while back. Can't remember the reason but I've reuploaded it with some improvements. Thoughts?

2) http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b.../ready/A6-EBI_EK761_2Oct_sudan.jpg
Sunrise wingview. Worried about the badquality I got for a similar pic from this batch that I uploaded.

3) http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/ready/ZS-SLE_FAJS5Oct.jpg
Tried a slight pan but a bit worried about the softness on the nose.

4) http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/ready/ZS-PHI_FAJS29Jul.jpg
Thoughts on this one? Worried about the leveling. I used the building behind as a reference.

5) http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/ready/I-NEOU_JSI15Aug.jpg

6) http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/big/ready/HAM_Terminal1Oct.jpg
My first terminal shot. Leveling the photo was tough. Still doesn't look right. Thoughts on this one?

Thanks so much in advance. My confidence is a bit low with uploading at the moment so any criticism or advice is welcome.

Hi SA006,

Ok at quick glance this is what I see (remembering I'm no screener!)...

1 - Overall looks soft, but on the other hand titles appear jaggered. Nice one and could quite easily be saved with another edit.

2 - I personally think this is a motive kick. It's just a wing showing not a great deal. No interesting weather, damage etc. I was looking for something thats just not there.

3 - Over edited. It's very jaggered on the tail, wings, horizontal stabiliser, titles etc. The whites look a tad blown out too.

4 - Not sure here, could get quality as it seems not quite up to standards. Just not sure though.

5 - Would look fine with another edit and less sharpening. This one jaggered too.

6 - This one "feels" unlevel. This also too seems to suffer from too much sharpening.

How are you sharpening your pics? Is it just a basic all over sharpen?

Hope this helps you a bit anyway.

Hi Eadster.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm having a real problem with jaggies. I'm simply using USM at about 180 with 0.2 . I need a link to an editing workflow thats been going around here for some while , can't seem to find it.

I understand where you are coming from. These two got rejected recently and I feel they have more of a motive than the one I currently have in the queue. Both rejected for badquality which I agree with for the first one as it is very soft and grainy due to a high ISO setting.

Seeing that jaggies are a concern, try using layers with one layer with a non sharpened image underneath the sharpened one, then erase the jaggered parts.

As for the USM, it's strange that jaggies are appearing after only 180. Do you have the camera sharpening turned on? If so, might be good to turn that off just as a test.

I don't even know if the Canon 300D has camera sharpening..

Thanks for your advice , I'll pull them and try again.

My 8 cents:

1) Soft and very dark on this screen here. Try to use Magic Wand tool to not sharpen the skies.
2) Same as Eadster
3) Soft and overexposed
4) Looks very grainy
5) This one can be saved with a little less amount of brightness and more sharpening
6) Feels unlevel and is soft and jaggy, I'm wondering about motiv...

7) Just not special, haven't got a thing to say
8) It's soft, jagged, and it looks like the window had been dirty 'cause of everything blown out 3/4 top.

A kinda newbie here talking, haven't got a specially high ratio or amount of photos in the DB, hope nothing b***s*** what I'm saying.

#1: is slightly too low in the frame in my humble opinion.
#8: try to level using the vertcal lines in the center of the frame, ie, the far corner and the vertical lines just to the right of the far corner.
