Screener Comment Question As To It's Meaning

Thu Oct 19, 2006 9:13 pm

On the following rejected photo, I was given the comment by a screener that I'm a bit naive about. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary in the processing of the shot so if anyone could comment or assist with their findings, I'd appreciate it. Problem may have been the low light at 0645am?

"Jeffrey, excess shadow highlight or similar"

Thanks in advance,
Jeffrey

Might be in reference to using too much of the 'shadow/highlight' recovery tool. It leaves dark areas a little muddy. And ordinary to you, may not be ordinary to others.

Talking about flower power, great livery, nice catch  cloudnine

The shot lacks contrast and looks a bit unnatural. Brightened up a bit too much maybe (possibly with the shadow/highlight tool as the screener mentioned).

Thanks Roel,

Generally when I'm editing, the only items I'm using when using Photoshop 7 is the brightness/contrast and the hue/saturation/lightness tools. Nothing else was used. That said, with the early morning departure and the way the clouds were with light/dark grey cloud layers (you'll see this shortly with my Island Air DHC8-400 shot that's in the queue process), it may be hard to improve otherwise? Will go back to the drawing board and maybe go easier on the brightness (never go above +5 generally but may have gone as high as +15 here)...

Further comments appreciated

Jeffrey
It was me that left you that comment and as JeffM says, it looked like excessive use of the damned shadow/highlight tool. In particular the whites look very muddy which is a symptom of using the highlight bit. Shadows also tend to be muddy and smoky when that tool is used, not shown on yours.
It is interesting to see that you are using the brightness control which is a pretty useless tool. I would suggest learning to use levels (Ctrl+L) or better still, Curves (Ctrl+M) (though are they on PS7?).
I hedged my bets in saying or similar as it looks as though you have managed a similar effect without the damned shadow/highlight.

Mick,

Appreciate the comments and thanks for clearing that comment up. I've only brought it to the forum's attention as I'd like to get this shot uploaded, of course, being a nice and surprisingly low shot subject (only 1 I believe otherwise of it on the site).
Will have another go at it, or may ask someone with more skills than me on the PS side to have a go at it (don't usually ask but again, a worthy addition if it can be done IMO).

Cheers

Hello Jeffrey.

Take care of Mick - even the mention of the shadow/highlight tool sends his blood pressure up  wink .

I have just had a very quick look at your photo and the histogram shows that it can be improved a lot by some simple editing. The graph explains why whites are looking so grey. Let me know if you think I can help out. Also you need to watch out for jaggies there.

Cheers.

Appreciate the comments and help that's being offered. I'm all for learning how to improve shots and as it seems this one has some merit to it, let's see what we can do.

Thanks
Jeffrey
