A380 Crosswind Photos. Good Enough?

Sun Nov 12, 2006 5:07 am

Dear all

Spent some hours at Keflavik yesterday shooting the landings from various positions in the 40-50 knot wind. Here are three of them. Question is. Do you think they would make the grade here, and if so, which one best illustrates the object, that is "Landing a very big airplane in 90° high velocity crosswinds"

http://www.verslo.is/baldur/1024/A380_0766_1024.jpg

which are both from the first landing, or this one from the last (sixth) landing.

Hope some of you will share their views on this topical subject, although I am not optimistic that any of them would make the grade at AN.

Thank you all

Baldur

I like the last one best although it's slightly soft

Agree that the last one is best, but it's IMO NOA_distance, and it's also not centered, and is badly sized.

If 1024 pixels wide, have the height between 683 pixels and 768 pixels. That one is 646 pixels high.

Take a look at this thread: 1024x768 Is NOA Size Now? (by Fiveholer Nov 4 2006 in Aviation Photography)

PS: Forgot to mention, there are 256 photos in the database of F-WWDD. Your pictures haven't got high quality, so I think you would even get NOA_quality if you upload...

... but first time with cross winds matters... and perhaps impossible to see in the future. This matter should compensate the minor lack of quality already commented before.

Just my opinion of course

Nice photos Baldur in deed. Weather conditions and light were not good at all for photography

About the photos I rather prefer the 1st one...

Of the 3 shots, the 1st is my favourite (biggest, plus shows great detail at that angle). The 'head-on' angle on the last one is great (my 2nd choice), especially with the touchdown effect. If you do use the last one, you may want to consider cropping it some more at the wingtips. nice shots overall though, wish I was there with you  Smile

In order of preference I would say 2, 3, 1... Yet another opinion!

I would agree that a tighter crop and a little more sharpness would be great on all of them, and then you should hopefully still have a chance even though there are so many pics of this particular plane, as Enrique said.

Thank you all for your comments.

I just added no3 to the que with a tighter crop and somewhat sharper.

Hope it makes the grade.

PS. I also replaced it on my own site.

Well Baldur, I'd crop much more from the bottom and use Shadow/Highlight (well, if you can use something else than your PhotoShop 7) to brighten up the bottom of the fuselage, it's black.

Good advice, does more harm than good in most cases.

This ain't good, but still a bit brighter. The histogram showed the photo very dark. I guess you forgot to take a look at it, Baldur, at least looks much better (brightness wise).

The third one is the right choice. For starters, it actually illustrates the crosswind.

David, shut up.
