YVR Spotters Meet For The A380 Visit. 11-29-06

Mon Nov 13, 2006 9:51 am

Hey guys,

As you probably know, the A380 is starting its "world tour" to build up its hours for Certification tomorrow. The final legs will involve flights over the South and North pole and Vancouver happens to be on one of the last stops.
It is supposed to arrive on Wednesday the 29th and then leave later the same day.

Since it is the only North American visit, there are going to be tons of spotters all over the continent flocking over to vancity to get a glimpse of the giant bus. Add in the locals and you can imagine, a pretty big turnout for an airbus. Risking it all especially the big gamble between rain or shine. Vancouver seems to have the reputation of being wet and cold during November and after some record rainfalls the past week alot of us are hoping that the sun will be out on the final week of this month.

So I am just typing all this to get the attention of YVR folks as well as spotters from other cities who are planning to visit Vancouver for the A380 visit. Since we are all fellow photographers and already a number of us know each other through this website (forums, photos) why don't we all get together that day and spot as a group? Then afterwards say in the evening we can all head off to downtown or something and eat at a restaurant or a pub. It would be nice to finally meet some prominent photographers and fellow forumers in person. That way it would be good for us as we can exchange stories and share our love for aviation as a whole.

What do you guys think??

PS. I am also one of the many who is coming to YVR that week to see the A380. If this works, I can contact some of the locals I know in Vancouver and include them into the mix.

I'm certainly up for meeting up on the 29th for the A380 visit (rain or shine). Perhaps a couple of pints at the Flying Beaver might be in order afterwards.

Let me know!

I'm flying out the day before from YYC, staying overnight, and flying back late the night of the 29th. I'd be happy to meet some of you and hang out. I'm not sure how close we'll be able to get during the day, so maybe a lunch date would work?

Yep, anything that would allow us to meet up would be very nice. I guess if we all meet up early in the day it would make sense for us to all grab a grub together at a McDonalds or maybe in that mall in Richmond and then head back to YVR to watch it depart. Then stay till sunset and head to someplace like Downtown Vancouver for dinner or wherever that Flying Beaver place is.
Hmm come to think of it, at the south side of YVR by the float plane terminal there is a small pub. It actually sits on the water just off the shore.
I went there a few years ago but forgot what it was called.

So basically, rain or shine on the 29th, we could all meet up somewhere and spot and then hang out afterwards and go home at the end of the day.

That pub would infact be the Flying Beaver. Great food, and great atmosphere. Infact, I went there for dinner tonight! Big grin

Look forward to seeing the 380  airplane

If anyones interested I'll be spotting at YVR tomorrow (weather looks like its going to suck though).

Just an update.
If the turnout is smaller, it would still be acceptable.
My hope is that there can be like 10+ spotters from airliners.net who gather together and spot on that big day. Worst case scenario maybe 4 or 5 folks from the site meet up and spot. I would still be interested and would take part in the meet and get some dinner afterwards.

Anyway, this is still over 2 weeks away so hopefully this will catch interests of other folks in and around the site. There is still plenty of time to get some names down and come up with a rough plan to determine where to meet up and what time.

Hey Grant,

How was the tourney down in Vegas? Any time to squeeze in the sights and sounds of the strip and its airport?
I am quite dissapointed that I could not make it out. I really wanted to get out of Calgary as the temperatues during the weekend was around -15 or so. Not pleasant at all.
It will be nice to meet up with you and some of the YYZ gang once again.

I talked to both Rob and Rich and despite work commitments they will be out for eat and drinks in the evening.

Absolutely! The Beaver is the "must have" ingerdient in any such meetup.

First thing, determine wind and probable runway for landing. Second, bring lots of Tim Hortons coffee and Timbits!
And you... Revolution, or just resistance?

A friend in Vancouver sent me an updated schedule for the 29th. Originally the 380 was supposed to arrive at 07:30 and depart at 16:30. Apparently that's been bumped up, now arriving at 07:00 and departing at 10:00, just 3 hours later....

^^ Oh i see, well as long as we can catch it during one of the major flight phases I am still happy.
I guess the evening meet for dinner will be the Flying Beaver!
Still not sure about where to meet up, and what time in the morning?

If it comes at 7am will any of you guys actually come out to see it despite the darknes?

You bet! I'll probably crank up the ISO and see if I can get something artsy since there will be a lot of city and airport lighting to illuminate the plane.

I won't have a car so I'm really not sure where I'll end up spotting. I'll probably tune in to ATIS around 6 am, then start hiking to whichever location will have the best view. One thing I'm not sure of though - is there any way to tell which of the parallel runways it'll use? In other words, if the wind is from the west (here's hoping, unless a YVR resident knows a good spot on the west edge of the airport) do the heavier planes favour a certain runway? The very few times I've been out there I didn't see any kind of pattern...

I will be working at the south terminal that day, so I will be out there for sure.

I don't really know any of the spotters on this site, but I wouldn't mind stopping by the Beaver after work and getting to know some people. I will need some way of finding the group though, other than a bunch of guys with big cameras.  Wink

Usually arrivals are on the North runway, and departures on the South. However, the south runway is longer than the north, so I'm not sure if that will change which runway they use.

95% of the heavy traffic always lands on 26R, I'm not sure the A380 would be any different. Best vantage point for the day would heavily depend on wind direction, but I'm willing to bet the AVIS lot will be the most popular spot.

Sounds like quite an opportunity! Wish it were coming in later in the day, not sure I can manage getting up at oh-dark-thirty for the 2.5 hr drive from Seattle. Maybe I'll just stay up all night and pound a bunch of Red Bull to stay awake (yes I am from Seattle, no I do not drink coffee).

BTW - where exactly is this Avis lot? Would like to do some spotting at YVR if I don't make this trip - It the best spot for doing photography from up there?

Sort of hard to explain where it is. I think there's a decent description on spotterswiki about it. It's located on the South side of 26R close to the main terminal. I think MacDonald Rd.? I'll have to check. It's a nice spot but unfortunately private property as well. Sometimes you can sit there all day and no one will come bug you, othertimes the Avis management is all over you. There's a fairly clear "Absolutely no bird/plane spotting" sign which most people ignore. Tough to say what will happen with the crowds which I'm sure will show up for the A380. It's certainly not a huge area.

On the flipside, if it is okay there, it presents a good photo opp with the sun at your back in the morning, and the Northshore mountains in the background (if clear).

The AVIS lot is the popular spot for getting the pictures of the landing airplanes but beware. As said above it is private property and with such a large crowd I don't know how the AVIS folks will react to gerbils like us loitering around.
At least for a start as long as we stay on the roadside or on the gravel where the big grates are for the drainage pond we should be ok.
Also cuz of the larger crowd common sense is a must to ensure that we dont get booted out just as the A380 taxis by or lands.

It will be interesting to see what happens on that day. Especially if it is going to be rainy how many of us will really be there.

Second alternative is the Templeton Spot but that is for arrivals only.
There will also be a big media prescence so keep an eye out for the news cameras and helicopters. I doubt that our turnout will be as large as Dusseldorf's though.

A friend of mine brought up a good point with regards to which runway the A380 will be landing on.

YVR's noise abatement procedures, directly from the IFR approach plates states:

2200 to 0700 Local time - Departure / Arrival of all aircraft on rwys 08L / 26R NOT PERMITTED

So, since the A380 is supposed to arrive at 0700, it's hard to say whether or not the noise abatement procedures will be an issue or not.

In any case the "Avis" spot would be no use for a 0700-ish arrival, nor for the departure (whenever that is) from the South runway.

A380 at YVR - Media Registration Information

RICHMOND, BC, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ - Media are invited to Vancouver
International Airport (YVR) on November 29 to see the Airbus A380 on its
only North American stop. The visit is part of a series of four
certification flights for the aircraft and includes 10 airports around the
world.
YVR has been preparing for newer, larger aircraft such as the A380 for
many years as part of ongoing expansions and upgrades. The airport's
runways are A380 capable today and, by 2007, two gates to commercially
accommodate these aircraft will be available as part of the new
international terminal wing.
MEDIA REGISTRATION
The day has been divided into four parts; media may choose to
participate in one or more portion(s). Please note that there is limited
space for the airside portions of the day (1, 3 and 4).
1. Aircraft Landing (photo opportunity: aircraft landing and taxiing to
parking location)

Sign-in 6:30 a.m. East Concourse, Departures Level,
International Terminal, YVR
Aircraft Lands 7:30 a.m.
Bus Returns 8:15 a.m.

2. Briefing (presentations by YVR and Airbus, questions & answers)

8:30 a.m.-9 a.m. East Concourse, Departures Level, International
Terminal, YVR

3. Exterior Tour of Aircraft (photo opportunity: aircraft close up, on-
site interviews)

Sign-in 9 a.m. East Concourse, Departures Level,
International Terminal, YVR
Bus Returns 10:30 a.m.

4. Aircraft Take-Off (photo opportunity: aircraft departing)

Sign-in 3:30 p.m. East Concourse, Departures Level,
International Terminal, YVR
Aircraft Takes Off 4:30 p.m.
Bus Returns 5 p.m.

Security Requirements
Media participating in the airside portions (1, 3 and 4) will be
required to present valid government-issued photo identification (driver's
license or passport). Specific names are not required in advance, although
this information is helpful, but you must register the number of people
attending the event(s).
Vehicle Parking Information
Please park vehicles on P2 or P3 of the parkade; parking passes will be
provided. Please indicate when you register if you would like to request
parking for live-transmission vehicles (times and desired locations), and
we will do our best to accommodate requests.
About Vancouver International Airport Authority
The Airport Authority is a community-based, not-for-profit organization
that operates Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The second largest
international passenger gateway on North America's West Coast, YVR is on
track to welcome 16.9 million passengers in 2006.
-YVR-
NOTE TO EDITORS: We ask for your help in informing your audience that
they should not come to YVR on November 29 expecting to see the A380.
The aircraft will not be visible from any pre-security parts of the
terminal and, due to the parking position of the aircraft and the time of
day for arrival and departure, there will be no outdoor viewing points.
We are encouraging those who want to see the A380 to look to media
coverage for the best view.

Oh and also it is one week away so I want to start finalizing a rough count of all who will attend.

Can I get a list of names please?

I will start with me: Bo Kim

So far, morning meet starting 7pm at YVR (Templeton or AVIS) spot all day, eat lunch at fast food or the mall, spot more if applicable and then go to Flying BEaver for Dinner and Beer. I would really like to push for this since alot of you guys who are coming down are all going to be at one place at the same time.

Update:
For my part almost all things are set like flights, hotels etc, except I need to find a way to get to my own home airport so I can catch my flight and the same for the way back since I don't have a car for awhile. Aye yah..

As for YVR and A380, it will come in and park at the main De-Icing pad so spotting will be tough but still possible along the Templeton St.
As for meetup, well it would be nice to have some names and descriptions that I can keep in my mind otherwise we will all be meeting up informally at sproadic times. Or I can just name the time and place and you guys all come there whenever you want.
How about AVIS Lot 9am be there or be square.  Smile
Of course you can come earlier or later but do say hi and chat with the other spotters on site.
Evening will be dinner at Beaver Pub at South Side around 6 or 7pm and then call it a day or go to the bars for ladies night Wedesday at the OB.

See you folks there.

I'll be out there around 6:30 AM. I'll just be wearing a grey MEC jacket, or black if it's raining. I'll wear a flourescent orange Nike running cap so I'm easy to spot (even if it's raining the brim will stick out). Plus I'll probably be the only guy out there with black lenses...  bomb

Well I was out this morning to see her. Yes I saw her land at 7:30am but never got close enough because it turns out AVIS lot was closed off so while babbling my excuses to the security the big whalejet just taxied by.. grrrr.....

Weather currently sucks balls and parked at the De-Ice pad. Will leave a bit earlier than expected. We shall see and one more shot for me.
There was also some interesting situation with an AC A340 on the South runway with emergency vehicles around the same time the A380 landed?

There was also some interesting situation with an AC A340 on the South runway with emergency vehicles around the same time the A380 landed?

Not sure about AC, but a Phillipine Airlines 340 had a bad night. Apparently they got 2 hours SW of YVR and turned back due to a bad flap indicator. Returned to YVR, worked on the problem and departed again. The second time they turned back after 40 minutes. One paper reported that they dumped 140,000 pounds of fuel before landing (although that doesn't make sense - I doubt the max ramp weight and max landing weight are 140,000 pounds apart).

When I went to check out of the hotel the lobby was swarming with about 150 Phillipino's looking for rooms, so I guess the airline had to put everyone up for a while.

Sorry we missed each other, I think I gave you my home number instead of cell number. I hardly use it, hence the screw-up. I was wondering why you didn't call all day...  Wink

I like the background noise, all camera clicks. It looks like there were a lot of people there watching.

Yea, there was quite a bit of people there...despite the freezing cold. The aviation community here at YVR is a lot bigger than I thought.

Just before I headed out to YVR I flashed my camera with new firmware. My normal shooting mode is to use the LCD panel on the back to confirm that the image is roughly the same as the real thing in terms of brightness. What I didn't realize is that the firmware upgrade reset the LCD to its brightest setting so I, thinking the camera was overexposing the scene (a common problem on older cameras in dark situations, but I should have trusted the D2x as it's performed well in the dark for me when I didn't meddle), set the camera to underexpose a stop or two.. or more. Combined with the high ISO of 800, the noise levels pretty much ruined the pictures. Purely operator error unfortunately, I should have gone through the settings with a fine-toothed comb after the upgrade.

Nice pictures guys.

I unfortunetly missed its landing and takeoff.
The thing was in my sights as it was landing but I missed getting any good views and pictures of it because the road to AVIS lot was closed off. Apparently an hour or so earlier some dumbass gerbil planespotters went in there and were parked at the AVIS staff parking lot.
The company got pissed, kicked them out and then had a secuirty guard at the start of the road screening people. If I had gone through I would of gotten some prime views of it taxiing.
So while babbling away with AVIS the plane came and went so I saw it from a distance. Very big and fat! Big grin

Takeoff was a >3/4mi visibility with blowing snow and darkness. It left at 4:25 and you couldnt even hear it amist all that snow.
I did get pictures similar to Calgary bill of it parked, but in the end as long as I saw her and got some pictures of her I am happy.
I also splurged a bit on shopping at Robson street the next day before heading back home.

All in all, despite the crap weather it was still worth the trip out and it was on national news all over the country. Lots of folks out thats for sure.

Hi guys,

I am a bit late on this but better later than never. On that morning I took a gamble that didn't payed off apparently and I went to the south side so I go the chance to get some shots of the A340 Philippines Airlines landing for the second time in that long night.

I've seen the A380 from a distance landing because it was impossible to get to the north side in time.

Anyway I admired the A380 on the de-icing pad and also I checked the action that was totally weird for YVR because of the snow.

I am sorry for the poor quality of the shoots but everyone that was there know how awful the conditions were in that day.

cheers,
Alex
