Upload Queue Limits Change For New Photographers

Fri Nov 24, 2006 4:10 am

Hi all,

As you know the upload queue limits are dependent on two things; the acceptance ratio among the last 50 uploads and the number of photos you have accepted in the database. Up until now, if you had not uploaded at least 50 photos, your queue limit was stuck on 2. This has now been changed to make it easier for new photographers to increase their limits. With a limit of two, it could take months before you got passed that magic number 50 and got your limits increased even if you have had no rejections.

I have been unable to test that the change really works and I would appreciate if those of you with less than 50 shots screened can confirm that it seems to work. Your queue limit should now be dependant on how many accepted photos you have among your up to 50 most recent uploads. So if you have had 10 photos screened and 50% accepted, your queue limit should be 10 (as described at http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/queuehelp.inc).

The screeners have also been given a new checkbox marked "Screen pre-1990 photos" which will give them the option to screen such shots quickly as they are few and rare.

Regards,
Johan

Hello Johan:

Thanks for thinking of us newbies! I just checked and, if I'm reading this correctly, my 57% acceptance ratio should allow me to upload 10, but I'm still restricted to 2.

Fixed! Thank you so much Johan, much appreciated.

I guess the least I can do in return is get off my butt and submit a bunch of photo's from the thousands I've been to lazy to upload!

That's a pretty good ratio for a newbie! Keep it up!

Hey Johan, how about some help for those of us who are not under 50 new, but still new?

Thank you DLX. It was 4:1 until I got cocky on my last two. But the accepted pic's are just average side shots, I haven't had the nerve to try uploading much funky/artsy stuff yet. I'm pretty humbled by the work I see from many of you here.

Hi Johan,

It is nice to see the constant improvements and the evolution of A.net as it continues to maintain it's status as the leading aviation site in the world. I must appologize for being slow to understand the new change you have made for new photographers.

I joined in May 2006, failed to read the upload instructions, focused on difficult shots and destroyed my acceptance ratio by appealing over 15 rejected photos. Since learning my lesson the hard way, it has been a difficult challenge with the 2 upload limit to climb up to the 30%+ acceptance ratio so as to be able to upload more of my large collection of recent photos.

I just reach the 50 upload level a couple of days ago thanks in part to my appeals all of which were not successful. I just check my upload page and saw no change.

"Based on your 50 most recently screened photos: Accepted: 12 Rejected: 38
Acceptance Ratio: 24% Photos in DB: 12 In upload queue: 2
Photos allowed in upload queue: 2 Photo uploads available: 0 Why?"

How does this new rule affect me and those in my situation?

Happy thanksgiving and warm regards

Ken.

Well I plugged it out with the 2-queue and am about two weeks shy of the 50 uploads. But I appreciate the change regardless and believe an acceptance ratio based system is definately the way to go.

Thanks Johan for all your hard work. Best site goin on the net!  checkmark

Good news - that provides an incentive to us oldies to keep digging out and scanning our old pics. It was the ability to view such a variety of old photos that attracted me to the site in the first place; in due course I began to upload my own scanned slides and am still doing so on a gradual basis.

It certainly is good news and it is interesting to finally have a stated timeline for what is an 'old' photo. I have quite a few pre-1990 scans here and have a few more to process however, thanks to my poor negative/slide storage habits, each one can take many hours of remedial work to achieve an A.Net standard. This certainly gives more incentive to put in the time, especially with winter almost upon us!

The new upload queue limits for new photographers is also excellent news. I firmly believe that the future of this website/database lies with the current 1000 'new' photographers who contribute their first photos and many of who become motivated to share more and experiment more.

So, if the person gets their very first shot accepted, their ratio is 100%. Does that mean they now have a 25 photo queue limit?

I too struggled for months in a queue of only two!!

I managed an acceptance rate of nearly 50% but lately it has fallen to 44% and I only am allowed five in the queue at the moment. I was just talking about this last week with a friend about how it would take forever at 2 and now that I'm over fifty accepted you up the queue for newbies to a limit higher than what I get now..

Kinda smarts!!

Maybe it would make more sense to have the new photographer queue limit dependent on the acceptance ratio, but with a certain limit to the number or queue slots (like 10 or something).

The penny has finally dropped after 16 months.

Sorry for sounding critical, it's a good move, but lots of people were pointing out the problems at the time.

Have to say I agree with you there Tim. This has been pointed out to me by users and crew members for some time, the move should have come earlier.

So what? Let's say, this person decides to use the right to upload all 25 at once, and that will be the moment of truth. If the first acceptance was just a streak of luck, the high queue limit will be lost straight away. If the person gets half of them accepted, they'll end up with 12-13 pictures in the DB and the moderate queue limit of 5 or 10. If all the pics get accepted, this person must be a genius , and then his high queue limit will be well deserved. I believe it's fair.

At the same time, I feel sorry for the guys who had to start in the difficult times of 2 pics limit, had to struggle and got stuck with low acceptance rate. Maybe they could receive some sort of "amnesty" to be able to start from "clean slate"?

Great move, Johan. A.net will definifely benefit from getting more "fresh blood" infused ...

I hear ya Dave but something had to give to the newbies coming up now. 2 was a little harsh. Just keep cranking out those great pics from LAS! You will have an acceptance rate of 75% and get 25 uploads slots soon!  thumbsup

So what is that those of us who are not major contributors to the queue because we only have 5 or less slots in the queue are now behind the hundreds of those that got their first and only shot in. I'm not very concerned that 1 person will blow his load putitng in 25 crappy (or excellent) pics into the queue. I'm concerned that 300 new photographers will put 25 photos in the queue after their first acceptance. That's 7500 photos, and could easily dwarf the current queue.

I'd also add that having only 2 photos allowed in the queue is a bit harsh for everyone, not just newbies.

2 D L X:

That's why I've made this suggestion about the 'clean slate' for those who have been affected by the 2-shot limit - so that your previous uploads don't count, and you too can start with this 'first shot'. Whether it's going to happen or not - it's another question.

The 2 shot limit is forcing folks like me to focus on uploading boring, mundane photos in an attempt to reach the 5 or more limit and to minimize further rejections. In the process, I have had to shelve (at least for now) interesting/exciting/creative/unique photos which usually lead to higher rejection rates. My first 11 accepted photos have averaged about 4100 unique views each. With my best shot at 8000.

My 12th accepted photo and a boring one has limped along with 81 views after been on the DB for 5 days. Yet to get the first 11 shots, I had to endure a 50% rejection rate. Yes I will overcome the 2 shot limit eventually, but at a high cost. Not everyone has the persistence, perseverance and the tenacity to endure rejections and the emotional toll of having photos rejected constantly.

I think the minimum limit should be 5. The rejections have helped me improve my shots and editing abilities. The problem is that at the time when a new member has greatly improved on his photography and is ready to contribute with better photos, he finds himself in the 2 limit trap with months of waiting ahead of him.

Great move in the right direction, but why not make it simpler and easier to understand with

Quoting Alibo5NGN (Reply 23):

5 is enough for (us) newbies, I started with 5, then 2, so I had both experiences, and I have to say that it was OK with 5. You need to learn and focus on improving your skills both as a photographer and editor, thus a reasonable low upload limit achieves just that. Just my  twocents  ...

Yeah, but for me the bigger issue is queue size for everyone. The worst thing that could happen would be a total inundation of the queue by people who get lucky on the first shot, new or amnestied.

Yup. After my 8 rejections in a row, I'm only uploading boring "safe" shots too.

Yes, I've thought of that, too... If it does happen, we might see things changing again quickly  Wink . Maybe it would be safer going back to the way it had been up until yesterday, but change the "newbie" limit back to 5?

I've noticed that in the last few days the quantity of pictures in queue submitted daily went up by around 200 pics on average. I wonder, if it is the promised 'inundation'...

Good idea. I'd personally do it from 1995 on down, since there were many rare aircraft/airline combinations and short-lived operators around those days that were only caught on film once or twice. Also this would be a good limit, since it's before photographers started uploading shots to the web.

If I had the time, I'd volunteer to be a photo screener. I'd make sure to prioritize the civil airliner stuff, new airlines/liveries and rarer shots.
