Canon EOS 1d Mark II Or The Mark II N

Sat Nov 25, 2006 7:56 pm

All,

I am in doubt whether I should buy the Canon EOS 1D Mark II or the Canon EOS 1D Mark II N?

I can buy a Canon EOS 1D Mark II for Euro 1250, NEW, body only. Norwegian camera.

Seems like a very good price, but not sure if I should save more money and go for the Canon EOS 1D Mark II N.

Any advice ??

Thanks!

1250 euros for a NEW 1DmkII??? That's a hell of a deal, should be rather careful I guess. New one's here (acc. to a lowprice website) are around 3200 and up Big grin

Get the 1D2. I love my 1D2n, but the difference between them is not worth 2000 euros. If you can get a new one for 1250 euros (!!!), then don't hesitate to buy it....if you trust the seller.  Wink

It's also two, not eleven.

Hasn't got in-built vertical grip, hasn't got weather sealing, hasn't got 1.3 crop, hasn't got 8.5 fps. (just 3 fps.).

Heh, I am starting to wonder how things would be without the crop. Alas, I don't have 4K to spend on a camera body...not yet anyway. Big grin

Well, the 5D is something like $2500. Just a thought.

Then again, every lens you use for aviation photography would suddenly become less adequate...

Yep, but wouldn't want your 100-400 to be 640mm on your 30D (or 520mm on the 1D) rather than 400mm on a 5D?

Yet once again David tells a pro (not the average A.net-pro, but the Mark Garfinkel-pro  ) about equipment, advantages and disadvantages. Yay, pleasure to read.

I guess Mark is well aware it's not 1D 11(eleven)N but rather 1D 11(two > II)N

Wanted to ask this in the thread for Sabena690 already, why would somebody be so obsessed by grips?

Ever needed those for aviation? Must be a darn fast Cessna you shoot...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you crop the full frame 5D image down to the 1.4 of the 30D and still have at least equal if not better quality?
5D is 12.8mp. I love it but, I also like wide angle shots.

I'm not going to make a single correction on what you said 'cause I'm not going to stand under still other bashing from the "pros".

But, from my experience with the 5D, you don't get the equal or better quality, you get less quality, but still very good! Close to the 20D/30D 1.6 croppes IMO.

Maybe someone else has got better quality by cropping from the 5D photos... that's of course very good.

Comparinga 5D to a 1 series body is like comparing apples to oranges.
The 1 series is built like a tank, shoots at 8.5fps has a AF system that leaves every other camera i have ever seen except the Nikon F5 for dead.
1.3 crop is good with aviation but it shines when shooting stuff like motor car racing/boat racing at close range where the AI servo truely shines.
Little difference between the 1Dmk2 and the MK2n so if you can getr it at that price run to get it.
You will not regret it for a second.

You want to get the best, and shoot many frames to get something to browse through.

Ah, the machine gun approach to photography, on your 5fps camera if your shutter speed is 1/500 sec you will miss 99% of the action.
So 8.5FPS is better because at 1/500 sec you only miss 98.3% of the action!!
Understanding your subject, anticipating what is likely to happen counts for much more than FPS

Quoting LOCsta (Reply 12):
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you crop the full frame 5D image down to the 1.4 of the 30D and still have at least equal if not better quality?

The 5D & 30D, I believe(and I should research this perhaps) the actual pixel density on the sensor of the 5D is slightly less than the 30D so applying the equivalent crop factor to a 5D image will likely produce an inferior image, all other things being equal.
EDIT: I did do the research, cropping a 5D image down to give same field of view as a 30D image results in 5Mpixel image compared to the 8.2Mpixel from the 30D.

Having said that would I turn down a 5D? no way, but will likely keep saving for the ID mkII N

Cheers

Cropping the image is not the same as increasing the focal length.

eyebrow I'm in the same situation, trying to make a decision on a Mark II or Mark II N.
Other than the Mark II N being two years newer, how do the two cameras compare when it comes down to the sensor? One is 16.7mp (wow!) and one is "only" 8.2mp.... Is it noticeable? I know there's a point where anything more than a certain amount of mega pixels is not noticeable, but how about these cameras?
Appreciate any input.

I've had the pleasure of trying the N. Its in a different league to 300/350/400/30/20/5D in terms of speed performance. All other points from above included.

You really don't need anything more than 300D for speed for aviation photography. Forward thinking is the key.

I think you're confusing something here. Both the Canon 1D Mk.II and the newer Canon 1D Mk.IIn have 8,2mp with a 1,3 crop factor. A new 1D2n is sold for around 3000 euros. The 1D Mk.IIn has a bigger 2,5" display and some additional features but both cameras produce the same image quality in my opinion.

The one with 16,7mp on fullframe is the 1Ds Mk.II. which costs around 6500 euros.

I own the 1dmkii and have used it for 2 years now. I LOVE this camera, it's built like a tank, takes awesome photos, has amazing speed and is the perfect camera for what i shoot.

I have also used an N and to be honest the only thing i like about the N is the bigger LCD screen, but to be honest the amount i actually use the screen for i do not have any need for the bigger one. I only use the screen for checking histogram and sharpness.

Buy the 1dmkii original and use the saved money on new glass, or a monitor calibration tool or take your wife for dinner.

Thanks for all the feedback. Seems the 1D MARK II is the one, dont care for bigger lcd. I considered the 5D, but that is slower then the Mark II, has less focus points, and 1:1 .. interesting for studio work, not in aviation!

I will check this price out, called the dude offering this. Camera's from Norway. I dont care as long as the menu is in English  Smile

I can see the bodies, so will check it out this week.

Will keep you posted

I would take the 1dMKIIN . I have also one and when you are spotting and you start with 8,5 pics in the second it is so great. Take the N and you will be happy speed is more important in this category than quality, although the N has a super quality.

Im saving at the moment for a 1D Mk II N.... The 8.5 FPS is the main reason for me as i cover Ice Hockey. And you sure do need the speed , unlike in aviation where IMHO its not important.

Im also looking forward to being able to have AF on my 400 L F5.6 with the 1.4 extender. Something the 20D cannot offer.

One thing... On my 20D with grip i have a shutter button + selector wheel on the grip. This allows photo to be taken while i hold the camera to the vertical ,with these button still on my right finger. Do you have these still on the 1D MK II N.

Sorry that I used a 1D II for this, but AFAIK 1D/1DII/1DIIn/1Ds/1DsII share the same body, so the selector wheel is there, and the buttons on the back:

RE: Canon EOS 1d Mark II Or The Mark II N

Can't see any real pics of aircrafts , just of the interior..

And in the section ''About me'' you say that you own only the Canon 350D*+18-55 and not the 1DMKIIN..

And your equipment list can't impress anyone..

Cheers

Didn´t say that there are any pics of planes . I said that I started with an Eos 350 D. I don´t want to impress somebody , I don´t have to impress somebody.

But I do not think Singel09 is interested about me, his question was which camera he should buy.
@Singel09 I suggest you the 1DMKIIN you will have a lot of fun with it , the operation is quite difficult at first, but after 3 days you know how to do it and then it is so great.

Bringing this topic back on track, Whilst I don't own either the 1DmkII or 1DmkIIN I have had the pleasure of using the 1DmkII briefly and was mightliy impressed.

The solidity & balance of the body felt very good to me, and the speed and accuracy of the AF was astonishing (compared to my elderly 10D). Sadly as it was a wedding I didn't get the opportunity to try the machine gun fire rate!  Wink

Yeah it sounds like a machine gun.

The Af is soooooo fast if you compare it with a 350D or so. It i great,
