Dejected!Screener Help Please

Wed Nov 29, 2006 10:18 pm

Hi there,

Having recently had some success in uploading and got my ratio above 50% I thought I had got my editing skills sorted, especially with regard to size, centre, level, colour etc.Just had the following 3 pics rejected,2 others I submitted at the same time were accepted, editing process was the same for all.Could I please have some advice on how to correct them because I'm a bit gutted at the moment, thought they were all good un's.

Pic 1 was rejected for centre

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 780 File size: 303kb

Thought it was pretty central myself considering the motive I was after,ie all aircraft in the shot.I have tried raising the main aircraft slightly but the tower in the background then loses part of its roof.Any tips?

Pic 2 was rejected for grainy and oversharpened

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 780 File size: 344kb

I honestly can't see the grain or jaggies

Pic 3 was rejected for quality and soft

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 780 File size: 304kb

Sharpened the same as the other pics and taken with the same camera and lens, where is the quality issue?

Any help including offers to edit will be received gratefully.

Hi Andy,

I'm not sure how to center the first picture. Was this the only reason for rejection?
Second image has jaggies all around the airplane and on the engine as well. I see grain in the sky, don't sharpen the sky.
Third image is out of focus and overall quality is just not there. Plus it seems unlevel.

My thoughts (not to be taken too seriously as I'm a "screener-in-training"  Smile)

First image:

Is that the full crop of the original photo? If so, not sure there is much you can do (IMO). Personally, I would like to see the main aircraft a bit higher in the frame to allow for the guy on the right to not have the bottom of his feet cutoff. If you could somehow do that while keeping the tower in the image that would be ideal.

Second image:

There are parts that are oversharpened (jaggies) while others are soft (nose and ramp area under tail). For a ramp shot similar to this the enter image should be sharp (but not OS). Masking the sky (or whatever technique you use) to avoid applying sharpening to that area should help with the touch of grain.

Third image:

As mentioned by Ivan, this image is slightly out-of-focus and suffers a bit of a leveling issue. Were these taken from a moving vehicle? Try holding the camera steady or be sure you're using a smaller aperture (larger number) for proper depth-of-field. You should be able to get foreground, main subject and background sharp (in focus) with shots like this. Do you recall what aperture was used on this image?

I laughed my ass off when I read this Mike.

Wouldn't the first one get badpeople as well? Second has major jaggies on the tail.
Hey that guy with the private jet can bail us out! Why? HE CAN AFFORD IT!

My bad.

They don't count towards motiv if they are blocking anything?

Thanks for the advice, especially Mikephotos, much appreciated.

Pic 1:I see the reason for centre now,it would look better if the guy in the bottom right didn't have his feet slightly cut off.The people in the pic are part of the motiv,ie each one is carrying out a different pre-flight check.

Pic 2.I can see the softness at both ends and the grain in the sky, still having some problems seeing the jaggies on my screen at full size.

Pic 3:I levelled this off the hangars in the background and the spine of the aircraft, this wasn't a rejection reason. Can't explain the out-of-focus comments, will have to bin this one.

Thanks again.

I think the horizont would work the best in this case.
