Help For Night Photo

Sun Dec 03, 2006 2:54 pm

Hello, I shot this at KFFZ (Falcon Field, Mesa, AZ) this evening and I was wondering if anyone could offer me any suggestions on improving this photo. I am thinking that the white balance should have been adjusted.

There's a lot of jpeg compression all over the photo. You should be sure to save at the best quality setting available. It's also oversharpened in places.

Those thin cheat lines are getting you in trouble. The color is a bit off, but those cheat lines are mixing together and are going to be tough to seperate.

Oversharpening and compression. Also needs ccw, and color temperature could be cooler.

It's a fine photo. Depth of field is good. The whites are good. I think it's fine.

Background colours are true.

Still needs a CCW rotation, and I'd like to get the yellow cast off to be normal white aircraft.

I still see lots of jpeg compression which leads me to a question of why this seems to be more pronounced on nights shots. How does one reduced this compression, it doesn't seem as much of a problem during the day?
Back to the photo, nice, but I think you will struggle to get it up to A.net standards, perhaps just one for your personal collection.

Good luck,

Stuart

I think it has the ingredients to be accepted, and being a fan of night shots, I am happy to have a go at an edit if you want to email me the original? Email me through my profile if you'd like me to try.

... on a side note...

Today I purchased my first camera (worth mentioning). A Nikon D50 with a Nikkor AF 70-300mm f4.4-5.6D ED. My goal is to snap quality photos good enough for airlines.net.

I know that some photos need modification etc. such as the photo above. What programs do you use for that? I would like to buy it and start learning it. I work for a software company (part time), but I'm more into mechanical design than graphic design, etc...

Thanks,

Vio

Main ones used here are Photoshop or Photoshop elements. Plenty of help to be found in these forums if you ask the questions.

Between the two shots, the softer one has a red cast to me and now the edited version has a yellow cast. The jaggies on the cheat lines are going to be really hard to make look right, as they are so close together.

Yeah I agree. With night shots, too much changing around of colours etc causes it to me not as natural as it was when it was taken and to me, leads to more of a manipulation concern more than anything.

Very nice shot. I would be interested to know the steps TZAviation went through to produce the final edit.
