Eurotrip (FRA, INN, MIL, MXP, TLS, AMS, Etc)

Wed Dec 06, 2006 8:18 am

Hello all!

I just bought my tickets to FRA. Going on 29 december and returning to Brazil on 7 feb (before carnival, of course ).
The main reason for my trip is turism, but for sure I'll spend few days spotting in some places such ZHR, INN (early jan), MXP, FCO, TLS, CDG, AMS and in the end of all FRA. I may make few detours, like go to LHR or ATH, depends how the trip goes (time and $$$).

I know that the weather will not help really much, but how is the spotting on those places? Any security issue? Are the spotting places easy to reach by bus, walking or any other way? I need few contacts if possible as well.

Any suggestions where can I go to the new year? Where is the best place in Germany (more beer, less $$$)?

Some of my photos:

Thanks!

Matt

I plan to be at FRA on January 6th, does this help?

Visit Dresden, nice city for tourism. Mail me if you have further questions.

YES! You seem to have never been here. We have many tourists even from South America. What speaks against "Elbflorenz" if you don't come for spotting only?

Hi Matt,

Make the trip over to MAN, it's probably Europe's most photographer-friendly airport along with AMS. Trouble is, there's not much touristy stuff to do but the return flight from Germany would be cheap.

I'm on hand 24/7 (well, not literally, but I only work three nights a week) to guide people around the airport.

Hi Karl,

I think UK will be a problem to me, as I'll not have much room on my backpack and I'll have lot of things to carry on, specially my camera. Still has that boring restrictions, 5 objects on a plastic bag?
How long is by train or "something-as-fast-as" to Manchester from Paris?
I have just one plan on my trip, is reach FRA on 7th feb Big grin

for INN, There is an invasion of russians on the 1st and 2nd of January I believe with some a.netters there. AirKas1 and myself will be in town 5th-8th.

I had some great advise in this thread:

I have been 3times allready at Dresden the recent years (Cart and DTM races at the Lausitzring), nice City - no question. But I think for instance AMS hat to offer a lot more .... , not to mention the best Airport in my opinion in terms of Spotting facilities and Traffic.

Advertising AMS isn't necessary any more. Just go there: large visitors deck, kaagbaan 06/24 (will be closed off next year for visitors) and polderbaan 18R/36L are the best places to take photo's. Traffic all day, cargo, heavies, props, very photographer friendly. Just look at the AMS pictures.

And you can do a side trip downtown.

Kind regards,
Erwin

What about spotter friendly airports ? Is a decision taken by the airport staff or just a case ?

and you could go to Aviodrome in Lelystad which I think you can get to by train from AMS. They have a preserved 747-200, which is the reason I would like to visit in the future.

Erwin, can you get to Kaagbaan and Polderbaan by public transport? I will hopefully visit AMS in the new year when I can get a cheap flight on BMI Baby from EMA. It might not be when you'r there Matt but if it is it would be cool to meet up.

AFAIK AMS is spotter friendly.. What do you mean?

Kaagbaan yes (although you'll need to walk a bit. But its doable. Just keep in mind that the spotterplace there will close)
Polderbaan, no

When will it close? Is it worth making the trip before it closes if I can?

For sure the red-light district and the drugs  Wink but I think that Dresden has to offer more culture (airport is no big thing...AMS is ways better) which was also his question.

May 2007 it will close, and it is definately worthwhile to go there before it closes then. Go around april to get the best weather.

EDIT: check this thread for the next a.net spotters meet sometime april. The exact date to be decided upon.

Ok, I threw Italy off my trip plans. I think Italy needs more than 15 days to know it well.
Now, for sure I'll go to MAN. I'll get an airplane from Paris (which airline is the cheapest? Easyjet?), will spot there for a couple days and after go down to Liverpool and London by train, bus, horse, swimming, whatever. I'll spend about 5 days up to 1 week in AMS (heard good things about there  goodvibes  praise  ) and it will be there between 25 jan and 02 feb.
Does anyone has contacts for me in AMS???
Thanks for all for the help!

Am not from Amsterdam myself, but during the weekend it should be possible for me to drive you around the airport. Don't know the city of Amsterdam too well, so if you are after a city guide you really should get someone more local then me.

Matt,

MAN is definitely worth a visit. You can fly either Easyjet to CDG-LPL or alternatively CDG-MAN with Jet2.

Don't bother with the train, Eurostar through the tunnel is quite expensive and then you'd have to change onto the Underground across London from Waterloo to Euston station and then another 2 hours up to Manchester. Will be quicker and cheaper by air.

Regards,

Tim.
