The lens is just as important as the camera.

I've got a Canon EF200mm f/2.8L USM and a EF135mm f/2L USM. ...If I buy a 400D and use those lenses with it, ...could the combination produce photo's of this standard ??????
I have never used a digital camera and I have no idea what to expect from them!

Why not just e-mail the photographer and ask them how they got the shot?

Well I am tempted to think that photo has been taken with a very expensive high end camera and equally expensive image stabilised lense. And really I am more interested to know what standard a camera(like 400d) that I can afford will produce.

Try searching the database for photos with '400D' in the remark...

But as others have said, the camera itself doesn't determine how good your photos will be. With the right lens and in good hands, a 400D could almost definitely capture a shot like Jian's.

If you can get close enough, those lenses in combination with a 400D can certainly give you good results! I use a (very) low end 300D (only 6Mpx) and it is not the camera that is the limiting factor (it is me  Smile ...)

But remember, with a digital camera, you also have to invest in some kind of editing software (processing on a PC is much better than in-camera processing) and the time required to get acquainted with the software...

Walter

Well for some of his shots the photog uses a 20D with a 300mm F4. So will a 400D and good glass around 300mm the equipment will be capable of producing results as you see above.

Don't for get to add the other factors though mainly the ability of the photographer to use the equipment, his skill and his luck !!!!

In another photo, the photographer mentions using a 20D with 300/ F4 L IS lense.
I believe that cameras like the 400D, 350D, 300D, 10D, D60 and D30, or their Nikon or other brand equivalants can produce such images. No need to mention the pro bodies here.

Very nice photo. I think the question shouldn't be "can my 400D and good lens do this?" but "Will my 400D and lens ever get to take a rare opportunistic shot under such unusual circumstances?"

The photo is impressive but equally so are the conditions.

I agree with the others. The photo was captured not by the equipment but by the skill and judgement of the photographer.

Such temptation is dangerous, and may lead to erroneous and unwarranted conclusions.

In the right hands in the right place at the right time, average equipment can get amazing results.

Better equipment does not make better photographers.

I think most people here would recommend the 400D. There are better cameras but certainly not in that price range.

More expensive cameras generally don't produce better images (that's up to you and, to a large extent, the lens) but allow more capture control using more advanced features.
