Dallas Is Closing!

Wed Dec 13, 2006 3:24 am

No, not the whole airport! Just the famous Founders' Plaza viewing area.

Don't worry, though. It is moving to a new location!

The airport is closing the plaza and road leading to it, in order to make a new taxiway, and funding from that project is going to pay to move the parking lot, benches, and monuments all to a new location on the northwest corner of the DFW field, at the corner of Texas 114 and Texan Trail (or W. Airfield Drive?). Here is a google map of where I think the new location will be:

DFW&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=15&ll=32.916305,-97.054253&spn=0.015347,0.043259&t=k&iwloc=addr" target=_blank>http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...n=0.015347,0.043259&t=k&iwloc=addr

This new area will be perfect for late day shots all year because you will face east, and it appears not too far from the traffic line for 18R/36L. Not sure if you will get a good view of the taxiway though. but you can be sure that this will be a no-hassle photo-friendly place.

Founders' Plaza will officially close January 4, 2007. So get your shots now before it is forever gone. The new plaza is supposed to open within 90 days from then.

That link displayed a broad view of the US. Accurate, perhaps, but not too helpful.  biggrin

Looking forward to opportunities at the new spot. From the two experiences I've had at the current location, I wasn't impressed.

I have only been there a couple of times, but you can get some beautiful shots of landings on 35C when the wind is out of the north. It seems like that would be the only time it would be good for photography.

Is Jan 4 the last day it is open or the first day it is closed?

Bummer.. I think we had about 7 or 8 Houston spotters go up there last year. Was a great spot to hang out and take photos. But like my fellow IAH spotter above said. Looking forward to opportunities at the new spot (if I ever get back up there).

I have looked everywhere and cannot find a source. Do you have one?

Glad the DFW airport people is relocating viewing area, instead of shutting out photographers/viewers away from airport. I am flying there next May -- I should go to new viewing area and experience the feeling there. Before that, I would need a new camera to buy and start shooting pictures again, like I did in the past.
