Buying 30D-What Lenses To Get?

Fri Dec 22, 2006 10:57 am

Yes, yes I know the 30D has had alot of threads lately but everyone is different.  Wink

I have finally decided to get myself a DSLR. I'll be getting it on Boxing day--Dec 26.

I have been to the store many times to see what is available. I like the 30D because it fits confortably in my hands. I will be buying it at Henry's.

I am getting 2 lenses. My original choice was the 17-85mm and the 75-300mm. I was at the store on Dec 16 and the person said to spend less on the kit lens and more on a telephoto lens. So I've been thinking about the 18-55 and the 70-200 f/4 L + a 1.4X extender.

So this is what I've been thinking about:

30D
18-55mm
70-200mm f/4 L
1.4X extender
2 Gig memory card
And a kit of things: grip, battery, bag, and I forget what the other thing is called. lol

So would this combination be ok? Any other lenses I should be aware about? And if there are, could you please post a link to the pic and description through Henry's website.  Smile I kind of have a budget. What I 've looked at costs $3625.14 Cdn

O.K. for what? It always makes me laugh when people can't even decide what lenses or accessories to buy.

How did you ever make the decision to buy a camera?

Yea, "buying" a camera, that's what he's doing. I can't get over the fact, that a 15 year old is getting a 30D if he wants it.

 Confused
Someone is buying a camera. What's so strange about that? What has age got to do with a 30D?

What about the fact that a 21-25 year old already has a 300D + 70-200 f4 ??No harm meant in this, Sebastian  Big grin I got my first DSLR (also a 300D) only 3 years ago when I was thritysomething......

If he is lucky enough to be able to buy a camera being 15, he is doing well spending it in photography. (IMHO)

Jonathan,

First off I wish I could look to afford a 30D when I was that age!

Anyway, for aviation the 70-200 f4 + 1.4 extender should serve you very well. Decide of the reach is enough for you. The 18-55 is, well, its what you pay for really and can take a decent image. What I would recommend is the 50mm f1.8 Mk II. Cracking lens and it will help you learn alot with working with a prime and depth of field.

So enjoy your new camera and remember, read that manual back to front and just keep taking photos.

Merry Christmas to you too

I own the 70-200 f/4L, I have tried the 1.4x II, I own the 50 1.8 II, and I've used the 18-55, and I must say it's a fine kit for starters. The 30D is very good too. I think 18-55 will be fine for a start, and in the future the 17-40 f/4L would be wise purchase IMO. I've used that a lot, and I love it. Still unhappy that I can't buy it... yet.  Smile

Great that more 15-year olds are starting dSLR shooting. Will be great to see pics for you!

Regards,
David

Spotting.

I used to spot with my dad's sony DSC-H1. So just a point and shoot. Then in the early summer I wanted to move up to a DSLR.

Yes the 17-40 is rather expensive. But that's what comes with quality.

Im paying for it with my own money. I have just saved alot over the years.

Thanks for your tips and information  Smile

You well Jeff? Seasons Greetings from IRE mate, hope you have a good one and best wishes to you and your family.  santahat

Johnathan!

I have the 70-200/2.8 and it's my favorite lens. If I was told I could only bring one lens with me it would be that one and the f4 version is just as good. As with any digital body, they really show up the cheaper lenses. I know the 'L' lenses are more expenseive but they really make a difference in the quality of your photo. As a rule, I generally don't use the extenders with my zoom lenses, but rather with my primes. Hope that helps!

Take care

Johnathan;

Congrats on getting to the point where you can afford this investment. Must have been more than a few hours working on weekends and after school. My hat is off to you - nice to see some committment and dedication in the "young 'uns".

I can't comment directly on the Canon versions (being a Nikon shooter), but the focal length ranges are pretty much in the ball park you want to be in.

Ken Rockwell (www.kenrockwell.com) has included some recent reviews on Canon stuff.

Best of luck - and happy holidays.

Congrats on choosing the 30D. That should give you a good few years of service.

I'd also consider the 10-22..i love mine and use it far more than my 17-40.

My current most used line up consists of:

20D
Canon 10-22
Canon 24-105 F4LIS
Canon 70-200 F2.8 LIS + 1.4x

This combination covers most things for me, but i'm beginning to miss the extra reach of my 100-400 which I will dispose of shortly.
Also, i think had the 70-200 f4LIS been available when i got my F2.8, I would have got that instead as I really don't use f2.8.

There is nothing wrong with being young and owning good camera gear.

I'm 21 right now and have a substantial kit consisiting off a 1dii/17-40L/24-105L/70-200LIS/100-400LIS and other primes and cameras and such. I use my kit for work and earning money so i can justify it all.  Smile

I would say for the 30D but a 10-20/24-105 and then a 100-400 and your sorted for every range.
