Canon 5d Or 30d?

Thu Dec 28, 2006 9:24 pm

Which one of these 2 cameras would you suggest upgrading from a 300d ? Which are the pro and con of both ?
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

The thing which makes this 2 cams different to me is the crop factor. Take a look at your lenses , the places you go and the style you take photos ----> Then you can make your decision .....

The 1.6x crop factor of the 30D may help your reach with zooms.
Also, the 30D has a faster 5 f/s burst rate than the 3 f/s for the 5D.

Actually cannot take a decision, really. It's also true that the 5d has a 12mpixel sensor while the 30d has a 8,2 megapixel sensor....

What lenses do you intend to screw on?

If it's the Canon EFs 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, you can only screw that on the 30D (and 300D, 350D, 400D, 20D and 20Da). The 5D doesn't accept EFs lenses.

Well, you've got your decision there: The 30D. The 18-55 does not fit the 5D and if it did, it would not do it justice (neither does the 90-300 and 50-500 do it justice).

Be very carefull with Sigma DG lenses on the 5D or the 1Ds or any full frame sensors, i.e. sensors bigger than APS-C as they will cause vignetting, (light fall off on the corners) as they are designed for the smaller sensors. Buy a 30D and invest in some good glass.  Smile

Take care

IMO I would chose the 5D over the 30D any time...

The 5D just handles so good. Go out to a local canon shop and test out these two and see wits you like better...

Just use the EF-s lenses on your 300d an all the worlds problems are solved.

LIPH, I have both and if its mainly aviation photography you will use it for then get the 30 with an L lens (70-200f2.8 or the 300f4). Money invested in some top quality lenses is a good investment - compare the price of a top LISUSM lens today to say 2 years ago, and then compare the price of a 300D when first released to a 350 today.

If your photography extends beyond aviation and say action photography (perhaps landscape, portrait, weddings, macro) then get the 5D.

However, if you do buy the 5D make sure you can put some quality L glass on the front of it. The results will be superb but your bank balance will take a large hit!

Best wishes
