Can Someone Explain This To Me? Pixel Question

Fri Dec 29, 2006 4:54 am

I am a total photography novice and I'm just curious if someone can descibe this to me in the most basic broken down form. This is regarding the camera I just bought, why would a 10.1 Megapixel digital camera have almost 10.4 million total pixels and only have 10.1 million useable or effective pixels?

• 10.37 million pixels total
• 10.10 million effective pixels

Just curious,
Thanks for any help.

The total pixel count is what is generated on the sensor, but not are not made up as part of the image. Effective pixels are the actual pixel count used to create an image, basically you don't have the "image" going to the edge of the sensor.

The pixels "left over" are used to de-mosaic the edges of the image.

You will notice no quality difference between an image of 10.37mp and one of 10.10mp.
