Photo Usage Request - Trading Cards / DVD

Sat Dec 30, 2006 2:44 pm

I'm sure I won't be the only one to get this e-mail, as it looks like a form letter.
Might as well start a discussion on it, as well as help me down this path.
Please feel free to comment or make suggestions, as this is a new one for me.

Thanks so much,
Tim

Dear Tim Lachenmaier,

This is a request to use some of your photos from Airliners.net. I have a small
budget for this project so I may be able to afford to purchase a few, if
necessary.

I am designing DVD slideshows and Aircraft Trading Cards, mainly targeted for
kids. I got the idea from my young nephew, who just loves airplanes, when he
asked if trading cards were available with airplanes on them. I soon found
there is nothing available in the U.S. So I am trying to make a go of this as a
small business. Lets hope it works.

The DVDs will feature 500 to 1500 photos of airplanes arranged in a slideshow
with accompanying music and/or narration. Each photo on the DVD will be shown
for just a few seconds at a standard NTSC or PAL resolution, which is about 640
x 480. Photo credits will be displayed at the end of the DVD. Some panning,
zooming, editing and other effects may be applied to the photos to make the
photos more appealing and the slideshow more interesting.

The Aircraft Trading Cards will be sets of about 72 trading cards with airplanes
on the front and informational text on the back and an optional thumbnail. Photo
credits will be given on the back. Photos used on the cards will also be shown
on the DVDs. See Terms of Usage for more details. Also a few aircraft trivia
cards will be included in each pack of aircraft cards.

I hope I can use your photos. To help you with your decision, I have included
several documents that I created in response to questions from other
photographers.

 Photo Gudelines - www.alphatangocharlie.com/photoGuidelines.asp
 Aircraft Want List - www.alphatangocharlie.com/wantList.asp
 Terms of Usage - www.alphatangocharlie.com/terms.asp

To further encourage you to give me permission, I am also willing to send you
samples of my product once I go to print. (I'll need your postal address.)

I tried to be as thorough as possible in describing my intentions and usage of
your photos. However, you are welcome to contact me if you have any further
questions or concerns.

I look forward to hearing from you.

This is a repeat scam.

Think about it....how many 'kids' are going to buy a DVD about airplanes? And buying the rights to add commercial music to a DVD for resale is very, very expensive.

I have had precisely the same message and I wonder how many more of us have. I have not replied yet as it looked like another of the something for nothing brigade (again)

I've had 2 or 3 emails about this before. I'm leaning towards not having anything to do with it as there have been no changes since I got my first email around 4 months ago.

640 x 480.

May want to email him back and help him out a little, 720-576 is more accurate.

I had to make a DVD slide show for someone before Christmas and i think it had 350 ish photos on it. photos on for 6 seconds each it gets very boring very fast. God knows what over 1000 would be like. Plenty of aviation DVD's around where the aircraft actually move about....

Quoting JeffM (Reply 2):
And buying the rights to add commercial music to a DVD for resale is very, very expensive.

Then don't use commercial music

Shame if it's a scam as you all say  . Trading card part is a cool idea.

RE: Photo Usage Request - Trading Cards / DVD

Sun Dec 31, 2006 5:42 am

Hi everybody.

I'm the one sending the requests.... This is a start-up business for me. I will be publishing my first set of 88 aircraft trading cards this Feburary at the Great Lakes Aviation Convention in Novi Michigan. That is, if I can finish the pre-production in time. I have a Jan 11th deadline I am trying to make.

I hope the following help convince you of my intentions. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

The primary product is the Aviation Trading Cards. There will be 88 cards featuring all categories of aircraft. The purpose is to get kids and teens more interested in aviation... Much like Young Eagles is already doing. I give kids their first airplane rides in my Cessna Cardinal RG out of Brighton MI. I got the idea for this cards from my 6 year old nephew. This was March 2006. I've been working on the idea in my spare time ever since.

Each Aircraft Trading Card will feature a modern photo of an aircaft (or a good replica) of the front. The back side of the card will identify the aircraft, provide a 2 to 6 paragraph desciption of the aircraft, show an additional thumbnail of the aircraft from a differnent view, and finally there will be a small section with general aviation history or facts. There will also be 22 Aircraft Trivia cards with 4 questions on the front and answers on the back. Each pack will contain 10 random cards: 8 aircraft cards and 2 trivia cards. There wil be 36 packs per box and 6 boxes per case. The suggested retail price will be $3.50 per pack.

I may be over optimistic about this.... but at the moment I think this may be a popular product within the aviation community. If I am lucky....it may have appeal outside the aviation community. In discussing the idea with vendors at Airventure last year, they commented that there are very few things under $5 that kids can buy. Even most of the die-cast model airplanes are over $20.

In August I printed some sample cards on a laser printer, cut them, and put them in small ziplock bags for the Brighton Air Show. There were a big hit. That experience enouraged me to continue with this effort.

In discussing the product with a few parents of the kids receiving the prototype, they suggested adding a multi-media component. That is, other trading cards often have a movie, tv show, or cartooon associated with it. I tried to get video... that that was way too expensive for me. Instead, I thought I could put a slide show to music. I am calling the DVD "500 Airplanes." It will simply feature a slide show of 500 photos that I have procured from various sources... mainly Airliners.net.

I admit I did not offer to pay for the photos. A sufficient number of photograpners were willing to provide the photos free or in exchange for packs of the cards. When asked if I'd pay for the picture, I was able to offer a small payment for the pictures I really wanted. Otherwise, I could not afford it. Each photo on the DVD will show for about 3 seconds. There are 500 photos. At $100 a piece (a cheap price for good photos) that would cost me $50,000. In order to make the first version of the DVD be sucessfull I have to find many photos at an affordable price. As such, I won't get the top-notch, really cool photos for this DVD. If this is successful, then I can consider a different strategy for the next DVD... 501 Airplanes.

I give credit at the end of the DVD for each photo used. I number each photo for the slideshow... then I reference each photo by number during the credits second at the end.

If you've made it this far in my response, I encourage you to look at a preview page on my website: www.AlphaTangoCharlie.com/preivew/

You are welcome to contact me offline at ttad@aol.com. Or I will try to monitor this forum for a bit to answer your questions.

Todd,

Kudos to you for comming here and posting for what you believe in.

Now, about the DVD... I have two kids, and trust me when I tell you that a slideshow of static pictures is about as time worthy as a cat turd in the corner. You'd have to come up with some VERY kick ass kids music to make the DVD fly.

That being said, the trading cards idea is good if you have a strategic vision for this. You are not going to make a lot of money, especially when you think that there are cooler cards like Yugio and whatnot out there being given away for free. One of the keys will be to get rare aircraft, and keep the # of those prints limited. Once you have your first batch, you can make a DVD of the cards for reference pourposes, but I wouldn't try to make it any cooler then effectively being a wishlist catalog for the few kids who are into collecting the cards.

I did respond and gave him permission.
He seems to be a nice guy apart from that I don't care anyway.
Also he did not ask for a HR version, the A.net version was good enough for him.
So he could have taken it anyway...... without asking.

TedTAce... thanks for the honest opinion about the DVD. As time goes on, I too am not as sure about the DVD as I am the trading cards. At a minimum, I'm going to produce the first version and reproduce the first 1000 DVDs to see how it sells locally. I'll measure the response and decide to continue or drop it. Besides, the cards can be played with anywhere and anytime, while the DVD can only be viewed by a machine. You can put the cards in your pocket. .. You can view all the cards all at once... You can buy mutiple packs of cards and collect them... You can sort, play games with, and trade the cards. None of this applies to the DVD. The usability-factor of the DVD is much lower.

Aviopic... You are right about the HR version. The cards are so small (63mm x 88mm) that the A.net version is often good enough. In some cases, I ask for HR to crop, remove the watermark, or to use for marketing materials. For my display booth I plan to have a display of super-large version of the trading cards mounted to foam boards so you can see them clearly from 10 feet away.

For the rest of you... please reconsider my request to use your photos. I don't think you'll be disappointed. We'll find out in a few months.... I just signed a contract with the printer.

If there are no delays, I expect to receive my first printing on 1-Feb. The first printing will be called "Maiden Flight". The Maiden Flight series will be used to attact retailers and future content providers (photographers, writers, or sponsors such as Young Eagles, Be-A-Pilot, AOPA Pilot Project, CAP, etc.) I suppose you could say that Maiden Flight will see if this concept can really fly. The first large scale series will be called "Oscar November Echo," and will be built largely on the Maiden Flight series. The series after that will be called "Tango Whiskey Oscar," if I am still in business. Wish me luck.
