Should I Appeal This One?/How To Improve It?

Wed Jan 24, 2007 6:07 am

Hi everyone,
I need your help with this picture which I got rejected for "quality", "not centered" and "soft appearance", but I absolutely do not agree with the screeners decision and the rejection-reasons  worried . I have not tried to upload so many pictures to a.net so far because I know about the very high standards and with my previous camera I was not able to produce such very good pictures, but I recently bought a Canon EOS 30D and the quality of my shots has increased a lot so for a start I was trying to upload this picture of which I thought and still think that it is very good in quality. I think that the aircraft is centered in that shot and furthermore I don't see any soft appearance in that picture. So maybe you guys can help me. Do you agree with the screeners? Maybe you can tell me how I could improve this picture or if I should appeal it.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help  Smile

Nice shot! But, I agree with the screeners, especially for the rejection reasons of 'quality' and 'soft'. I do feel if you resized this image down to 1024, you would be easy to deal with sharpening to this image.

If you like, you could send me over the original shot and I'd like to try to edit it.

Yes, I agree here. You're pretty close though. First question: Why do you upload at 1600 pixels wide?

I'm a little surprised by this picky rejection for an aircraft which is new to the database but try the following and it should be ok:
- resizing to 1200x... will get rid of the quality as at 1600x... small flaws just show too much
- centered: proabably the crop was meant by this rejection reason; crop a little tighter on the tail and nose and maybe all so slightly higer in the frame
- a little more USM (UnSharpMask) should do the trick

A note to the screeners (at the very bottom of the 2nd upload page) telling them that this aircraft (reg/aircraft combination) is new to the database could have helped to apply less stringent acceptance criteria.

Also, Oliver, I think the following guide could be useful to you:

Cheers,

Hi A380CGN,

Well, first of all the camera does not make the photographer, it's the other way around!
Now, to your picture. Do not try to upload bigger than 1024 pixels wide unless you are absolutely sure that your picture is top quality! And yours is not.
If you look carefully to the rear and the bottom fuselage (lower engine nacelles), there you will find your soft areas. Additionally, the Germanwings title on the fin is soft/blurry. You can see that you sharpened selectively some areas (reg, fuselage title), but that does not get rid of the general softens. As for the center, that is probably the least of your problems! A bit harsh I would say...
I suspect everything will look much better at 1024, with the correct amount of sharpening. And do not resize this one, start with a new edit.

Hi again and thanks for your help!
I edited the original pic, resized it, corrected the frame a bit, used some more USM and manually sharpened some parts.
So what do you think about it now? 1200 pix wide or 1024 pix wide. Can I use one of them?

Yes, I know and I didn't want to boast, it was just an explanation.  Wink

Hy,
the 1024 one looks ok to me. But don't take me too seriously, I'm not a screener. Good luck.

All in all quite ok! I'd go for the 1024pix but it looks a little too bright for me at could get an overexposed rejection; if you could tone it down slightly it should be good to go.

Okay guys, I just uploaded the 1024pix version (a little bit darkened, as ThierryD suggested). Now I can wait some days...
And thanks again for your comments.
