Photoshop & Upload Help Please...

Thu Feb 01, 2007 5:30 am

Hi all,

I have just one photo currently in the database, which someone else (very kindly) edited and resized. This individual did a great job and my very first upload was accepted.

I got my own version of PS yesterday and have started playing with it. I've edited a shot into what I think is an acceptable upload, but since I really don't know what I'm doing when resizing, etc, I thought I'd ask. The original is 3.68mb, saved in max. quality (12 in PS as I remember) and 3461x2310 pixels. The revised image is 2000x668 pixels (same ratio kept), saved as quality 8 (high) and is 272kb. Is this OK? I know A.net uploads must be smaller than 1mb so can I keep upping the pixels until it's just under the limit or do I keep the size and save at a higher quality (say 11 or 12)?

Thanx for any help.

Karl

You'll probably have compression at this ratio (8). Always try to save at maximum quality and minimum compression.

But the size is a bit strange, should be 3:2 ratio more or less. 1024 x, 1200 x or 1600 x are preferable sizes here.

So with the photo you mentioned, step down each time and save at max quality until the size reaches 1 MB.

I think you meant to say "the revised image is 1000x668?"

At that size you should have no trouble using quality 12 and still stay under 1 MB.

Karl.

In my editing I always begin by cropping and resizing. As you are new to the editing process I would strongly recommend you resizing your edits to 1024 x 683 pixels. Then do the rest of your editing with this smaller file. At the end save that at maximum quality - 12. I cannot recall an occasion with a plane photo where doing this has resulted in a file larger than 1 MB. For 'standard' shots of an aircraft with no major background details you should be looking at something in the region 500 - 650 KBs.

Given the high quality standards here you really don't want to be saving your edits at anything less than maximum quality.

Cheers.

Interesting statement; personally I do all my editing, except sharpening, BEFORE resizing. I believe you've much more freedom of movement that way.
After completion of my editing I only resize and sharpen and off it goes always saving at max quality if file size permits.

Likewise, except that the only cropping I do on the unresized photo (which I keep as a TIFF) is to get rid of slanting borders due to rotation.

The large TIFF enables me to produce hi-res jpegs on the fly if I need to. I don't crop this one tight to a.net standards because tight crops limit publishers' options when doing page layouts.

Thanks guys. I get it now. Just one more question - at what aspect ratio should I save the file? I've narrowed ot down to two options:

a) based on the original photo
b) 6x4

The 6x4 option is surely keeping with the 3x2 ratio, no?

I'll edit a shot and quickly post it here, with a view to someone perhaps approving it.

Cheers,

Karl

OK, here's one I fiddled with briefly. Have I gone over-board with anything? Does this look OK for submission?

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 683 File size: 726kb

Thanks,

Karl

Hmmm. It looks pretty bad, doesn't it. Looked nice in Zoonbrowser, why so terrible here?

Hi Karl,

The sky looks pretty bad, almost like you've lightened it too much. You have a dark halo around the tail also.

You can email it to me and I can do an edit and show you my steps if you wish? I can do that this evening when I get home from work. PM me if interested.

Regards
Colin

Looks OK to me when enlarged to its full size ... except for:

(1) noisy sky (looks like it's been sharpened - you need to deselect the sky when sharpening)

(2) a dark halo around the tail (overuse of the shadow/highlight or burn/dodge tool?)

(3) just maybe slightly oversharpened titles esp. the 737-800 logo on the rear fuselage (white halos).

The photo would probably get rejected for reasons 1 and 2, especially 2, but you've come pretty damn close for an editing beginner.

OK, how about this one? Different pic altogether.

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 683 File size: 456kb

I feel it didn't need much editing so all I did was sharpen it a little. Is this ready for submission?

Thanx,

Karl

Looks very good to me. I might try giving it the slightest touch more sharpening, see whether it makes an improvement (it might not).

Karl.

To my eye the sharpening is not right on this 757 - a bit soft still. How are you sharpening?

As in your other post, this one can be improved further - let me know if I can help.

Thanks a lot guys, very helpful responses. The above shots were sharpened using the simple 'sharpen' tool, however I've since discovered the 'USM' function, which seems to make a more accurate job. If anyone can give these shots a go I'd be more than grateful - just let me know which file(s) you will require.

Ta,

Don't use that... It will give you too much grain. Only use USM or 'Smart Sharpen'. I go with USM and it tends to work much better.

Good ol' memories.  Silly Used that function for a *long* time when using the IXUS i camera.

I'm happy you're doing better and better by the day. You'll be good me thinks.
