Spam Protection In Photographer Contact Form

Wed Feb 14, 2007 1:47 am

Hi guys,

Recently we've had reports about spam being sent through the photographer contact forms on Airliners.net. Some sad person has written a script that sends a spam message through the form to a lot of photographers.

No more of that. Today we implemented the first captcha on Airliners.net (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) which will prevent any more automated spam messages to be sent through the interface. You can read more about captcha here.

Please try sending a mail to yourself to test that everything still works as it should.

Thanks,
Johan

That's great news, thank you.
Hopefully it does work as it's meant to.

Thanks for looking out for us! This could not have been a "quick fix," looks like a lot of work.

How long to think up that one?

Never been spammed yet... maybe not enough photos.

Simon, did the subject of the spam email start with "Airliners.net photo feedback:"? If not, then it was not sent through the interface.

Let me know.

Thanks,
Johan

Hi Johan,

No, the subject didn't say that. However the email was as follows:

"Hi!

----------------------------------------------------------
Message was sent using the mail interface on Airliners.net
http://www.airliners.net/"

Simon.

Ok, that's the contact form from your user profile. I did not know there was a problem there as well. I will have to add the same system to the member contact form.

Thanks for letting me know.

Regards,
JOhan

Ok, I've tested it now and the form can only be used by registered members. If you send me the "from" address included in that email I will be able to delete the violating account.

I've also changed the text at the bottom to read:
Message was sent using the mail interface on Airliners.net
by user [username]
http://www.airliners.net/

Johan
