Nikon D3 On Final Approach?

Thu Mar 01, 2007 7:30 am

There is a sudden spurt of rumours around a PMA launch of a Nikon D3something. The Nikonians forum, which seems to have some good contacts, has added "D3" to its D1/D2 forum and they don't seem to make changes lightly.

Anyway, if the rumours are true (and I've been waiting a long time for this to happen, so I have high hopes but I won't believe it until I see it!) the camera is in the 18-20 mpixel range with a 1.1 crop factor, plus a 1.5x crop factor in High Speed Crop (HSC in Nikon jargon) mode. This of course would render DX lenses semi-useless as they'd leave vignettes in the regular shooting mode.

There isn't a lot of other info yet, but any details would be suspect anyway since Nikon is tight lipped.

Rumoured launch is October/07, which for Nikon probably means it will be on backorder until March/08....

Sounds good, and will probably cost a lot too. Lots of rumours circulating though. As well as those of something like an improved D200? or new lens. Just wait for PMA 2007 - new Coolpix cameras already have been announced.

I was hoping for a full-frame sensor. Let's wait and see.

with a 1.1 crop factor

Personally, I'd b very surprised if Nikon moved away from their DX sized sensor. It would immediately make most of their more recent lenses of no use. If they haven't seen the need for a full-sized sensor up to now, I wonder why they see the need for one now (especially at 1.1 crop).

I'm guessing they've just run out of room for photosites on the sensor. Nikon hasn't done a great job dealing with sensitivity (hence not-so-great high ISO noise) so unless they've come up with new technology, increasing sensor size is the other way to deal with the problem. I think their fallback is that the HSC mode suits DX lenses, but most DX lenses will also work on FF sensors at the long end. For example, my 17-55 gives FF images from 24-55.

I just can't wait for the speculation to end and actually see this thing in a shooter's hands...
