Rare Opportunity But Tricky Conditions.

Fri Mar 16, 2007 8:37 am

A couple days ago, I had the rare opportunity to catch aircraft using runway 09 at SAN. I have a few shots here that I would like your help on.

Thoughts, concerns, advice? Thanks.

Flat, and dark. Nothing stands out as rare to those that have not lived there. Sorry.

I knew I should have put a note in my post that I was not using that statement as reason why they should be appealing or accepted. Just a personal reason as to why I like the photos. When using 09, they touch down right in front of our gates offering a great vantage point from our jetways.

With that said, if there is anything that can be done to improve them, I would appreciate the help.

Just bad luck that the gloom was there. Sure you could probably make them look better then they are, but bad weather is bad weather, why make something out of something that isn't there? Wait until the situation presents itself again in better weather. Not everything is do-able.

Yeah, but unfortunately runway 09 is only used in bad weather (fog). Oh well.

Never been a fan or really paid much attention to this airport at all (spent 5 days in SD last week and didn't visit once.  Silly ) but Id say you are quite wrong with your assessment. Ive lived in the area off and on since '93 and have seen runway 9 used on 'decent' weather days.

From what I have witnessed, the best time to get runway 9 ops photos are as a storm is moving out or when there is a Santa Ana blowing.

I have lived in SD, and worked at SAN for 2 years now, and only once have I heard (from coworkers) of a clear day when 9 was in use. And yes, it was due to the Santa Anas. The most common reason for switching to rwy 9 is low visibility and every time I have been at the airport during rwy 9 ops have been for the same reason.

So yes, it does happen, but it is even more rare than the rare use of rwy 9 altogether.

Wait until it happens again. It will. Then get your shots. Simple as that.

Hey Ryan,

Unlucky about the gloom, but as Chad said, you'll get that perfect Santa Ana day soon, and then it will be fantastic for you. I'm sure you've seen my Runway 9 shots that I got on a clear day, and it was spectacular. See you soon! Shaun

Well, that's assuming it happens while I'm at work. Don't really like going down there unless I'm supposed to be working, or flying out. But you're right.

Anyway, it's not like every shot I've gotten accepted has been taken in absolute perfect conditions. So, I will leave them in the queue and hope for the best.

Yeah, but it was the gloom that caused the runway 9 ops in the first place.

Very understandable.
