How To Make Color To B&w Conversion Well?

Sat Mar 17, 2007 6:37 pm

Hello !

I wanted to know how to convert coloured digital pictures to black & white pictures. I know you can change it by just using the grayscale but I find this way do not give full satisfaction. So I was wondering how do you handle the process, what are the steps to make a good conversion from color to b&w.

Regards,
Alejandro

I always did it in Photoshop but doesn't turn out too well for me.

Be aware, if you want to upload it, that most pics in B/W will be rejected for being B/W.

I use the Channel Mixer in PS. It gives you a lot of control, and can yeild several different results, which could be as bad as it is good.

In Photoshop best way is using channel mixer. To emulate some classic bw films just insert these values in the sliders:

Film Red Green Blue

Agfa 200X 18 41 41
Agfapan 25 25 39 36
Agfapan 100 21 40 39
Agfapan 400 20 41 39
Ilford Delta 100 21 42 37
Ilford Delta 400 22 42 36
Ilford Delta 400 Pro 31 36 33
Ilford FP4 28 41 31
Ilford HP5 23 37 40
Ilford Pan F 33 36 31
Ilford SFX 36 31 33
Ilford XP2 Super 21 42 37
Kodak Tmax 100 24 37 39
Kodak Tri X 25 35 40

I'll give this a second thumbs up, I've been using these for B&W and they work very well out of LR.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I will try the channel mixer and work around this.

I really must thank you for mentioning this! They are excellent values to use and I really love that I can put them in and get the results similar to (if not almost exactly) original good quality B&W film.

You're welcome, I'm just the messenger, I took those values from a portuguese photography forum.

What are a.net's limitations regarding black and white conversions and uploading them to the DB?

Say I had a nostalgic shot of an old airliner, yet I took it with my 400D yesterday and edited it up in CS2, would I then be able to upload it as a B&W assuming I filled the categories in correctly?

At first thought the issue is an editing rejection, or possibly a personal rejection (dependant on the shot of course) but can it be done?
