Missing Part Of Aircraft Rejections

Hi guys,

I am a new member to a.net and as such, I require a bit of clarification on rejections. Why is it that a photo can be rejected for " missing part of aircraft " and other photos, which admittedly are fantastic quality shots, can be accepted with half of a wing missing or more from the frame for example? I am not by any means whingeing about rejections of my own, just do not understand what the rules are in terms of rejections for this. I guess I am a bit frustrated when I see some shots, which again are great quality, being accepted when they are missing important parts of the aircraft. Any help/reasons/advice would be greatly appreciated as I am very confused.

I think what you are upset about is motive rejections, and indeed this is subjective but in my view you answered your own question in saying "which admittedly are fantastic quality shots".

Missing part of the wing is no big deal, but 'awkward crops', pushback tugs, or other clutter is often a pre-cursor to motvie rejections.

Missing parts of aircraft fall into motive rejections which in general terms, at least in part, could be explained as poor composition of the the photograph. If you look at it this way it is easier to understand how photographs can be accepted with huge parts missing, The well composed, well motivated tight crop is acceptable whilst leaving a wingtip or tip of a tailplane off simply looks sloppy. Include the whole aircraft or really go for it and crop tightly.
I studied photography at college and my teacher always said, "Fill the frame for impact" something I try to do. With aircraft that often means the tight crop.

Its all in the composition and what your motive is at the time of shooting the photo. Do you want a full frame side on profile shot or do you want something with impact, up close, filling the frame? If you want a profile shot, compose it with all of the aircraft parts visible, its that simple. If you want a tightly composed shot for impact, take a look at some of the recent photos in database, there are plenty to give you an idea of what is accepted and what isnt.

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the replies to my post. Please don't misunderstand me, I am not at all upset by some photos being accepted with missing parts.....like I said, they are great pics and deserve to be in the database as far as I am concerned. I just wanted a bit more clarification on what the rules/general guidelines were on the issue. I thank you all for your reply, it is very helpful. Andy
