Hello all, I need some advice on how to handle a request to use one of my photos. The person asking never says anything about buying the picture yet he wants to use it for a cover shot for a magazine. Here is his e-mail:

Dear Anthony Russo

My name is Weerapan Meewannasukkul. I am a commercial pilot and a co-editor of The Aerospace Magazine in Thailand.

The Aerospace Magazine is an aviation magazine in Thai language. It is the first commercial aviation magazine in Thailand since last year. Our objectives aim to supporting the aviation knowledge for Thai people.

This May issue, we will introduce about LOW COST AIRLINES,history, business models, the first low cost airlines, the first successful airliens, currents low airlines in Europe, Asia especially in Thailand...

Now we are looking for the cover about LOW COST, we decided to select the picture about Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) because it is the first low cost airlines in the world so we found that yours PSA picture number 1073662 in www.airliner.net is well suited for the cover.

So, I would like to ask for permission to use it for the cover for MAY...The LOW COST AIRLINES. And I will print them about 5000 copies. The size is 7.25„e10.25 inches, ISBN: 9 771905 187004.
Due to the size of cover, may I request for higher resolution (at least 2175„e3075 pixels) and any charge you want please tell me about it.

I will put your name in the Contributor page that you give us the right and you still have the copyright... and I will send you some copies.

Our website: www.aerospacemag.com... It is not completed yet until next month.

Best Regards,

Weerapan Meewannasukkul

I have uploaded the photo to this forum for all to see, I think it is worth a lot more than what he is offering. Can any of you give me advice on what to do here? How much should I charge for this shot? Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated........Thanks, Anthony Russo

People tend to take away persons names as a sign of respect/privacy - unless Im proven to be wrong?

I would ask payment up front (paypal for example) due to a lax customer (money wise) from me.

I've had an e-mail in the past from this guy but he never said...

Ask him what he has paid for previous covers first and don't send anything till the funds are in your paypal account.

You may find this link useful.....http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm

Editorial, front cover magazine, less than 10,000 print run is quoted as low price of $550, average $775 and high $1,000. I would imagine that those prices refer to US/ European established magazines.

Being of Thai origin I doubt that you'll get even the low price. I'd probably pitch for an offer up to that price and make sure that this guy is aware of the link I've given and the prices quoted.

Note that these prices are for a one time use and do not mean that the user is purchasing the copyright. There is NO REASON at all to ever sell the total copyright to a picture, ( unless the price is VERY right ).
