Looking For New DSLR. Comments?

Wed May 02, 2007 11:38 am

My camera recently went out commission, and I'm looking for a DSLR to replace it. I don't have the money to get the crème de la crème, but I'm looking for something good quality. Better than the 5.0 mp that I have. Canon preferred, but whatever could get me the most bang for my buck. Thanks.

Canon EOS 300
Canon EOS 350

400-580 dollars. If youre going to buy a Telephoto lens, but with the intent of saving money, Sigma.

Nikon D40 is under $1000 AU here and that is fairly good pricing. 6MP in the D40.

There's also Pentax K100D and K10D (which I have), 10.2 MP, Inbuilt shake resistance , which is reasonably priced. Mine was around $1350 AU with a lens.

Sigma make a fair amount of their lenses to suit.

Look at the Olympus Evolt series as well. Less of a lens selection, but very high quality build, great price, and the kit lenses (the zoom one as well) are very, very good. I have a 90% acceptance ratio with it.

I've heard good things about the Canon 300 and 350, but I can't find them anymore. Though, the Rebel XT seems to lie right in that area. Sigma was hard to find information about, but what I did find was out of my price range. 6mp from the Nikon and Pentax are a bit lower than what I'm looking for. Olympus Evolt looks very nice, and right in the right price range.

There is no such thing as a Canon 300 and 350 in the US. Those are european and asian marketing names.

In the US they are known as the Digital Rebel XT (Canon 350) and Digital Rebel (Canon 300).

Hmm. I've heard good things about the Canon 300 and 350, but I can't find them anymore. Sigma was hard to find

Ahh, that explains why I've had such a hard time finding them.

Had a hard time justifying this camera. At that price, for 6mp, it just isn't a viable option given its the same price as an evenly matched 350D. Although I realise its a Canon, thus cheaper, it still doesn't justify the price. I'd save the extra couple of hundred and look at the D80 if I were a Nikon man.

IMO the new D40X with 10.2 mega pixels should have been the original D40, I never saw what Nikon was going for with that one.

The latest Canon is known as the 400 in Europe. If you are buying a Sigma lense, the 70-300 mm equivalent f4 - f5.6 DG is reasonably priced but, be aware, that this tends to be soft at full zoom and its autofocus is slow. Fine for airliners on the ground or short finals, not so good for fast jets.

Good point to consider.

Here in México the latest canon is the Rebel XTi, think in Europe is the 400D, not so sure, right now my local dealer has a good offer with the Rebel, but for $120 less they are also ofering the Sony alpha 100K; but i´m not so sure.
